But to his dismay, Geraldo Gomes quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Atlético Mineiro's Diego Viana played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Claudinho da Cunha in the 10th minute of play. Diego Viana made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Geraldo Gomes in the 12th minute of play. Fabiano Mineiro came free with the goalkeeper in the 18th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and Sílvio Luís Oliveira could save by the left post. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Josué Dias during the 21st minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The supporters of Independente AC booed when Atlético Mineiro was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 21 match minutes in a wonderful position. Josué Dias didn't get a good kick on the ball. 22 minutes into the match, Claudinho da Cunha notched a goal, 0-2, to the right of Atlético Mineiro's Diego Viana. Diego Viana was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Diego Viana didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Geraldo Gomes went, in the 31st minute, to the upper right corner, 0-3 was the resulting score. In the 39th match minute, Atlético Mineiro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Vitório Fonseca to maneuver through the defense. In the 40th minute, Geraldo Gomes made a precise shot to the right of Diego Viana. Atlético Mineiro's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 0-4. 43 minutes into the match, Independente AC's goal looked a bit too open when Fabiano Mineiro came free, but Sílvio Luís Oliveira reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Atlético Mineiro were furious when Wilson Barreto was red carded, 46 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. In a very dangerous position, a player in Atlético Mineiro fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 45th minute. Penalty! The referee gave Independente AC a penalty, 48 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Alessandro Esteves, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Atlético Mineiro's Diego Viana. 0-5. Disappointed in the 0-5 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The audience thought a goal was coming when Claudinho da Cunha got free with Diego Viana in the 57th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. An unexpectedly hard shot by Vitório Fonseca in the 61st minute of play forced Independente AC's goalkeeper Sílvio Luís Oliveira to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A collision led to Independente AC getting a freekick after 68 minutes play. Sydney de Queiroz hit a great ball. Sydney de Queirozs short, quick shot in the 73rdth minute got Diego Viana to make great effort and bar the ball away from getting in. Diego Viana made a fantastic save in the 77th minute, when Geraldo Gomes sent off a good shot on target. In the 79th minute Independente AC were awarded a corner. Alessandro Esteves went to the cornerflag to take it. When Sydney de Queiroz came up free with the goalie in the 80th minute, the Independente AC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Sydney de Queiroz couldn't finish the play. Diego Viana was a little too slow when Sydney de Queiroz got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 83rd minute. The score was now 0-6. Diego Viana made an important save on a dangerous shot by Geraldo Gomes in the 87th minute. Diego Viana showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sydney de Queiroz in the 89th minute of the match. Diego Viana made a fantastic save in the 90th minute, when Geraldo Gomes sent off a good shot on target. Diego Viana showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sydney de Queiroz, who was totally free with the ball in the 92nd minute. In the 99th minute, Geraldo Gomes left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net.
