An unexpectedly hard shot by Berat Haliç in the 21st minute of play forced PERSPOLIS's goalkeeper Dean Grieve to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 21st minute, Berat Haliç ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Dean Grieve was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-0. When Anton Sundin fell near the penalty area in the 23rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Foguera's protests and gave Anton Sundin a yellow card for diving instead. A nice corner shot did that Honorio Carceles got away a dangerous shot. Despite this Santiago Cañizares quite easily got ahold of the ball to make the save. The audience was convinced that David Villa's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Dean Grieve was relentless in the 32nd minute of the game. Santiago Cañizares made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cipriano Ganix in the 37th minute of play. In the 45th minute David Villa shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Dean Grieve saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Dean Grieve made a fantastic save in the 46th minute, when David Villa sent off a good shot on target. PERSPOLIS's Bela Herrero got a good chance for a goal in the 47th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar.

The wind increased when David Villa made the kick off in the second half. 51 minutes into the match, PERSPOLIS's goal looked a bit too open when Berat Haliç came free, but Dean Grieve reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a rather tough play, Foguera's Berat Haliç got a free kick in the 52nd minute. 55 minutes into the match, Foguera's goal looked a bit too open when Cipriano Ganix came free, but Santiago Cañizares reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. PERSPOLIS's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Honorio Carceles in the 56th minute. The corner led to PERSPOLIS's Bela Herrero getting away a dangerous shot that went just outside the goal. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Cipriano Ganix in the 58th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Santiago Cañizares prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 61st play minute Cipriano Ganix came free and shot an unsuspected shot which went into goal from the right pole behind a surprised Santiago Cañizares. 2-1. With a couple of smart ball manuevers David Villa in the 67th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Dean Grieve saved PERSPOLIS from getting behind. Axel Uplegger kicked well hit freekick during the 68th minute of the match. PERSPOLIS's Frutos Barrios was substituted for Yiyo Esperta. If Cipriano Ganix had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 77th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 80 minutes into the game, Frutos Barrios was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. PERSPOLIS's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Foguera the free kick. Emiliano Quintero received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 92nd minute. Santiago Cañizares tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 94 minutes into the match, PERSPOLIS's goal looked a bit too open when David Villa came free, but Dean Grieve reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. PERSPOLIS's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
