If Lanny Gilmore had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 15th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Aaron Smallwood made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Heiner Klütz in the 18th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Arturo Turner in the 21st minute of play forced BSC Jena 98's goalkeeper Jens Ebbenga to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Arturo Turner came up free with the goalie in the 25th minute, the Santos FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Arturo Turner couldn't finish the play. Lanny Gilmore received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 33rd minute. Jens Ebbenga tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After some fancy dribbling in the 34th minute, Arturo Turner managed to get in a good position for a shot. Santos FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Arturo Turner was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jens Ebbenga breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Santos FC's attentive Terence Nicholas managed to snatch the ball when Lysander Zierer made a throw-in in the 40th minute of the game. After 41 played minutes Santos FC got a freekick which was hit by Lanny Gilmore. When Lanny Gilmore got the opportunity to take care of a free kick it resulted in a really dangerous shot that almost went in the goal. Instead the ball went too high, a missed opportunity for Santos FC. The supporters of Santos FC booed when BSC Jena 98 was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 43 match minutes in a wonderful position. Mike Duttenhöfer didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Dominic Albright came up free with the goalie in the 44th minute, the Santos FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Dominic Albright couldn't finish the play. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Anton Ackermann made a kick off. Jens Ebbenga didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Lanny Gilmore went, in the 52nd minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. In the 55th minute of the game Lysander Zierer made a throw-in which Hermann Kloppers played forward. Santos FC's Terence Nicholas managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Lysander Zierer in the 56 minute of the game. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lanny Gilmore got free with Jens Ebbenga in the 58th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Lanny Gilmore recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 59th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Jens Ebbenga made an important save on a dangerous shot by Arturo Turner in the 61st minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Anton Ackermann in the 64th minute of play forced Santos FC's goalkeeper Aaron Smallwood to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Lanny Gilmore blasted a shot towards the goal in the 67th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Jens Ebbenga having to make a save. The audience thought a goal was coming when Arturo Turner got free with Jens Ebbenga in the 69th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Lanny Gilmore fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 70th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jens Ebbenga having to interfere. Santos FC made a substitution. Tyron Velasquez replaced Arturo Turner. In the 76th match minute, Santos FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Tyron Velasquez to maneuver through the defense. In the 78th minute of the game Lysander Zierer made a throw-in which Hermann Kloppers played forward.
