The audience was convinced that Libertad Sarmiento's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Gustave Lechat was relentless in the 6th minute of the game. An unexpectedly hard shot by Vicente Millano in the 13th minute of play forced R.C. Thanks to some nice moves Libertad Sarmiento could shoot a difficult shot in the 24th minute, which Gustave Lechat however easily saved by the left post. A hard shot 25 in the game by Libertad Sarmiento from a close distance when the talented Gustave Lechat managed to make a qualified save. R.C. Marseille's players were relieved. Libertad Sarmiento had several of the R.C. Marseille's defenders around him in the penalty area when he, after 26 minutes of play, received a pass and succeeded in some way to shoot a shot which went straight ahead into goal. This resulted in a 2-0 score and a disappointed Gustave Lechat as he didn't even see the shot coming. If Libertad Sarmiento had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 29th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. A collision led to Real Sociedad getting a freekick after 35 minutes play. Vicente Millano hit a great ball. The R.C. Marseille fans' excitement grew in the 37th match minute when R.C. Marseille's Paulo Teinturier looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-1 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Sauveur Lisundia showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jean-Paul Fromont in the 39th minute of the match. Gustave Lechat made a fantastic save in the 41st minute, when Vicente Millano sent off a good shot on target. With a little luck, R.C. Marseille's Gustave Lechat got control of the ball when Libertad Sarmiento tried to sneak it across the goal line. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-1 at half-time.

The wind increased when Paulo Teinturier made the kick off in the second half. After some fancy dribbling in the 61st minute, Paulo Teinturier managed to get in a good position for a shot. R.C. Marseille's supporters rose to their feet, but Paulo Teinturier was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Sauveur Lisundia breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. A collision led to Real Sociedad getting a freekick after 64 minutes play. Vicente Millano hit a great ball. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Paulo Teinturier during the 65th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After 66 played minutes R.C. Marseille got a freekick which was hit by Paulo Teinturier. Gaël Janssens's late challenge caught a R.C. Marseille's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Gaël Janssens helped the player get up and apologised. After having played for 70 minutes, Libertad Sarmiento managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Real Sociedad's supporters crossed their fingers, but Libertad Sarmiento was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. R.C. Marseille's Gustave Lechat played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Vicente Millano in the 72nd minute of play. In the 73rd minute of the match Real Sociedad got a corner. R.C. Marseille's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Hubert Jouniaux ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner went over the outstretched arms of R.C. Marseille's goalie and right to Alexandre Hélie. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. R.C. Marseille's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. Gustave Lechat took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Vicente Millano, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Gaël Janssens kicked well hit freekick during the 76th minute of the match. In the 84th minute, one of Real Sociedad:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Real Sociedad. Sauveur Lisundia had in the 87thth minute some difficulties stopping Sofiane Candau's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. Gustave Lechat stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Vicente Millano's shot from short distance in the 96th minute. When the referee blew the final whistle, Real Sociedad could leave the field as winners, despite R.C. Marseille having more of the ball for most of the match.
