In the 22nd minute, Ronnie Odell got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Ryszard Pankiewicz might have been able to make a better finish in the 34th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over José Luis Chilavert. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Cosme Reno's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but José Luis Chilavert read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 53rd minute of play. 59 minutes into the game, Vladimir Tepes threw the ball into play from the sideline.
