Enzo Luongo sent away a hard shot on goal in the 11th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. A throw-in in the 16th minute of the game was made by Archibaldo Velaz with Willie Colon as target, who quickly passed the ball forward. In the 17th minute Alexander Del Piero shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Bruno Antognoni saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 17th match minute, Colombia was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Esteban Đido to maneuver through the defense. Rene Higuita was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. When the match clock showed 41 minutes, the score became 2-0 when Enzo Luongo sped through Colombia's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Rene Higuita. Italy's Bruno Antognoni played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Alexander Del Piero in the 44th minute of play. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Willie Colon stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Alexander Del Piero could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 54th minute of the match, but Bruno Antognoni made a huge save. Bruno Antognoni made an important save on a dangerous shot by Esteban Đido in the 56th minute. After 59 minutes of play, Italy's Enzo Luongo made it 3-0 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Rene Higuita was left in no man's land by his defense there! Italy made a substitution. Donato Zoccolo replaced Camillo Moriggi. Colombia made a substitution. Don Gato replaced Alexander Del Piero. The audience was convinced that Aldo Di Carlo's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Rene Higuita was relentless in the 64th minute of the game. The corner led Italy's Carmine Gargano to fire away a dangerous shot which Rene Higuita despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Rene Higuita made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Aldo Di Carlo in the 84th minute of play. Bruno Antognoni made a fantastic save in the 85th minute, when Don Gato sent off a good shot on target. Don Gato could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 85th minute of the match, but Bruno Antognoni made a huge save. Rene Higuita came out of the goal in the 87th minute to try and stop a shot by Italy's Aldo Di Carlo. But to his dismay, Aldo Di Carlo quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 4-0. The throw-in from Cristiano Cordone in the 91st minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by Colombia's Nerio Jacome. When the match clock showed 93 minutes, the score became 5-0 when Aldo Di Carlo sped through Colombia's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Rene Higuita.
