João Pedro Pirani struck a weak shot in the 10th minute. Sérgio de Alcântara didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Hawks. 11 minutes into the game, Humberto Zanette was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Cuiabá FC's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Hawks the free kick. A collision led to Cuiabá FC getting a freekick after 11 minutes play. Humberto Zanette hit a great ball. 13 minutes into the game, Hawks's João Pedro Pirani nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Sérgio de Alcântara made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. Jarbas Dias made an important save on a dangerous shot by Lino Camargo in the 20th minute. Juarês Cavalcante received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Jarbas Dias came out and tried to block the shot, but Juarês Cavalcante slotted it home off the left post making it 1-1 in the 21st minute. 24 minutes into the game, Hawks's Jarbas Barral nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Sérgio de Alcântara made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-2. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Róbson Campidelis during the 26th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. If Jarbas Barral had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lino Camargo got free with Jarbas Dias in the 32nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Tião Falcão in the 40th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sérgio de Alcântara saved Cuiabá FC from getting behind. After the first half Hawks were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Jarbas Barral stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After having played for 64 minutes, Lino Camargo managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Cuiabá FC's supporters crossed their fingers, but Lino Camargo was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Luciano Sampaio fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 68th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sérgio de Alcântara having to interfere. After some fancy dribbling in the 71st minute, Lino Camargo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Cuiabá FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Lino Camargo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jarbas Dias breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. 74 minutes into the match, Hawks's goal looked a bit too open when Lino Camargo came free, but Jarbas Dias reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Sérgio de Alcântara was out of position in the 79 minute of play, and Jarbas Barral capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Jarbas Barral really showed his touch with that goal: 2-3. In the 83rd minute of the match Luciano Negri shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Sérgio de Alcântara showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. João Pedro Pirani's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 88thth minute, Sérgio de Alcântara skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Jarbas Dias took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Juarês Cavalcante, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side.
