Laubau's Merten Weimann played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Domenico Wild in the 12th minute of play. If Toni Fuchs had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 15th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a defensive mix-up in Laubau's zone, Marcus Austen stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Merten Weimann came out of the goal and Marcus Austen tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Thorsten Hocker struck a weak shot in the 21st minute. Heiner Sandt didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Laubau. Toni Fuchs received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 24th minute. Merten Weimann tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After having played for 35 minutes, Domenico Wild managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. schalke 04's supporters crossed their fingers, but Domenico Wild was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 37 minutes into the game, Marcus Austen was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. schalke 04's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Laubau the free kick. schalke 04's Heiner Sandt proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 40th minute of the match, managed to save schalke 04 from getting a goal against them. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

Toni Fuchs recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 52nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Laubau's zone, Domenico Wild stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Merten Weimann came out of the goal and Domenico Wild tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Domenico Wild sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Marcus Austen was shown his second yellow card after 65 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. After 66 played minutes schalke 04 got a freekick which was hit by Marcus Austen. After having played for 68 minutes, Hakan Singhammer managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Laubau's supporters crossed their fingers, but Hakan Singhammer was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. In the 84th minute, Toni Fuchs got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Joscha Bork fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 86th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Merten Weimann having to interfere.
