In the 17th minute of the match GREMIO got a corner. Juventus FC's goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Mykhaylo Slavik ran over to the corner to take the kick. An unexpectedly hard shot by Juninho Pernambucano in the 19th minute of play forced GREMIO's goalkeeper Kåre Tolsson to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of GREMIO booed when Juventus FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 21 match minutes in a wonderful position. René Peterek didn't get a good kick on the ball. 24 minutes into the match, Juventus FC's goal looked a bit too open when Dmytro Maschenko came free, but Olexiy Stus reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line.
