But to his dismay, Roy Makaay quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. In the 24th minute of the match, Ty Hislop tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Nebojša Jerić saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. 25 minutes into the match, Croatia's goal looked a bit too open when Tommy Boyce came free, but Nebojša Jerić reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Phillip Woodhall showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Roy Makaay, who was totally free with the ball in the 28th minute. Valter Malekin took the ball and in the 42 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Phillip Woodhall. Phillip Woodhall dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-3. Derek Findley took the ball and in the 46 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Nebojša Jerić. The Northern Ireland players were disheartened as they walked off the pitch after the first half. Croatia were winning 2-3.

The wind increased when Roy Makaay made the kick off in the second half. Nebojša Jerić showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Derek Findley in the 52nd minute of the match. Phillip Woodhall made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Nikola Haramina in the 54th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Derek Findley in the 56th minute of play forced Croatia's goalkeeper Nebojša Jerić to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Croatia booed when Northern Ireland was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 58 match minutes in a wonderful position. Lloyd Mumford didn't get a good kick on the ball. The Croatia players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
