Nero Tucknott received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 19th minute. Biddle Schutt tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Biddle Schutt showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Iggy Neich, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Clifford Mitchell stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Earle Malacarne sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Abraham Hess during the 85th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. The supporters of Southgate booed when Sydney FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 85 match minutes in a wonderful position. Abraham Hess didn't get a good kick on the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Sydney FC's zone, Earle Malacarne stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Payton Gray came out of the goal and Earle Malacarne tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Keith Peterson hit a great freekick 91 minutes into the match. The final whistle blew with the score still tied, and both teams left the pitch thinking about the missed chances that could have given their team the win.
