Otoniel Mondragon was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Sergio Madrid showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-0 in the 37 minute of play. Roque Fernendo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Isidro Madriz, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Sergio Madrid in the 44th minute of play forced U21 Costa Rica's goalkeeper Otoniel Mondragon to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Alberto Villarreal in the 95th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Otoniel Mondragon saved U21 Costa Rica from getting behind. Antonio Picado struck a weak shot in the 98th minute. Roque Fernendo didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for U21 Costa Rica. Arsenio Manuelo hit a great freekick 99 minutes into the match.
