The supporters of Canada booed when Iceland was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 36 match minutes in a wonderful position. Beinir Jónsson didn't get a good kick on the ball. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 6-0 at half-time.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Hjálmar Barðason made a kick off. The audience was convinced that Claude Burkhart's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Sigurvin Gretarsson was relentless in the 57th minute of the game. 64 minutes into the match, Iceland's goal looked a bit too open when Krystian Żmuda came free, but Sigurvin Gretarsson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Krystian Żmuda in the 70th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sigurvin Gretarsson saved Iceland from getting behind. Iceland's Sigurvin Gretarsson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Krystian Żmuda in the 72nd minute of play. In the 77th minute Cletus Beaulieu shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Sigurvin Gretarsson saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 78 played minutes Iceland got a freekick which was hit by Ísólfur Hafþórsson. Sigurvin Gretarsson stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Krystian Żmuda's shot from short distance in the 80th minute.
