The audience thought a goal was coming when Afonso Antunes got free with Kaprasíus Línbergsson in the 27th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 27th minute, Afonso Antunes ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Kaprasíus Línbergsson was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-0. André Porto showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Lár Erlendsson in the 29th minute of the match. An unexpectedly hard shot by Þröstur Guðbergsson in the 37th minute of play forced Portugal's goalkeeper André Porto to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 40 minutes into the match, Iceland's goalkeeper Kaprasíus Línbergsson had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Afonso Antunes. In the 42nd minute, Afonso Antunes got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Lár Erlendsson scored 2-1 in the 45th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of André Porto, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 2-1 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Þröstur Guðbergsson was the one to do the kick off. The supporters of Iceland booed when Portugal was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 50 match minutes in a wonderful position. Fábio Oliveira didn't get a good kick on the ball. André Porto showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Vigri Alexandersson in the 56th minute of the match. Kaprasíus Línbergsson came out of the goal in the 87th minute to try and stop a shot by Portugal's Pedro Flores. But to his dismay, Pedro Flores quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 3-1. Alfred Ásvaldsson hit a great freekick 92 minutes into the match. After a defensive mix-up in Iceland's zone, Paulo Setúbal stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Kaprasíus Línbergsson came out of the goal and Paulo Setúbal tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Iceland's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because Portugal had won, even though Iceland had held more of the ball.
