Well, the game is alive and also the players are not very keen to share tactic information. I don't really know, I make a tactic, keep it a few seasons, and when I am too bored, I move the players up and down, then I loose :D Th "best" guide in this game is The zone Argentina (hablamos of tactica.. or something like this, then use google translate or any other translator to translate into something that can be somehow read in English ). I had good results both with players closer to the center or wider on close to the edges or a combination of this. I guess it depends on the combination of the skills your players have and on how the opponent plays. The thing is, I'm afraid, that no one really knows :))). You should look at the skills your player has and get used to them and then watch a few games with different tactics and see what seems more suitable for your players. There is no other secret.

In real life other than the center, players on whatever side has the puck play as wide as possible in attack to increase spacing and open up as many scoring lanes as possible for everyone else on the other side. Nobody knows, if in doubt, just put them in the center of the circle. :). Another way is to make 2 tactics, one with players up and what them down, whatch a few games and see how players behave and figure out based on their skill combination where they would give best results. This is what experienced managers do, but each has his own theory. My theory is (and I also change my mind every few weeks, lol) is that a fast player generaly, can play higher on the field. "Fast" player does not mean onlu good at quickness, but also skating, that helps the player turn around faster. A slow defender that is very good on his main defending skill (ie checking, power) might be better if played lower, because you want him to be able to do the body check and not get surpassed by the winger. In other words: play in friendly leagues, experiment and see how the players behave.
