How far back can a winger be?

I’m sure some of you have tested this out a lot. I’ve seen plenty of squads that have a winger very wide and in the forwards area in tactics. Oftentimes even more advanced than the central forwards. But how far back can the winger be placed in tactics for the sim to still know to use him as the winger and for him to drive in crosses? Can he be in the midfield section? And as far back as the midfield line in the tactics screen?I’m sure some of you have tested this out a lot. He can be back further in the midfield section as you say but it’s not good to have a winger that deep. Ideally the smaller distance the winger has to cover from receiving the ball to crossing will result in better effectiveness. More crosses = more scoring chances. The bigger distance the winger has from the corner results in the winger passing backwards or getting run down by a defender and tackled a lot more often.He can be back further in the midfield section as you say but it’s not good to have a winger that deep.
