When selling a player, if your player isn’t bought he will return to your team immediately after the deadline and be able to be re-listed straight away. Buying a player you still need to wait 24-25 hours after the deadline for him to arrive st your club.

That is for preparation for the club left by the player, to change tactic, training, etc. and for me personally if i don't get the notif for unselling player after the deadline that is the indication that my player has been sold :)
