I noticed one of my strikers doing this recently too. Thankfully he has 8 tackling so he was fine there.

When you have a red card automatically your lowest numbered striker moves into that position.
The can make rules to offset this

chucky's right about the rule he stated.
Here's the explanation of that -
In your formation, you have 3 positions, i.e., Defense-Midfield-Forward. Likewise, the 'football pitch' on your Tactics page is divided into 3 parts.
As you already know, the players positioned in the uppermost half are the forwards. When your defender is sent off, the striker/forward with the lowest jersey number (that's what chucky meant when he said ''lowest numbered striker'') replaces your sent off defender in his place.
This is 'automatically' done in order to fill the loophole left in your defense by your sent-off defender. Naturally, the decision about which player you want to replace your sent-off defender (or whether you at all want him to be replaced) should be your decision, but let's leave that discussion for another day ;)
So, that's how this rule works. Your lowest jersey numbered forward replaces the sent-off defender. And I believe it's the same with a sent-off midfielder too (correct me if I'm wrong).
Now, the solution to this is -
1) For a wing playing team :
Make sure that your winger is NEVER the least numbered forward...because if he replaces the defender (or in short, leaves his position), then your wing-play's screwed up right there and then.
Generally, what I do is, I keep my least numbered player as the 'supporting striker' (that is, the striker who is not the main guy who receives the crosses). Due to this, even if my supporting striker replaces the sent off defender, my attack is still more or less stable, since i still have the main two elements of my attack force, that is, the winger and the main forward (who gets the crosses of my winger).
Also, along with this, you can also set a rule such that as soon your supporting striker replaces the sent off defender, you make a substitution substituting the supporting striker with a good bench defender (if your supporting striker's already good at tackling, then no need). Also, you can form an alternative formation to set up a new efficient defense, since you will now have 1 player short.
2) For a short passing playing team :
Give the lowest jersey number to a player who will not affect your attacking options drastically. For eg, giving the lowest jersey number to your main and best striker will only bring you ruin, so give it to such a player who's either the weakest of your forwards, or whose position is such that it won't drastically affect your attacking options.
Also, again, you can either immediately substitute the forward (who has replaced your sent off defender) with a benched defender, or if the forward's already good at tackling, then you can keep him (and save yourself a substitution).
Again, you may have to set a new alternative tactic (along with the substitution), because you are a man down, and you never know which defender of yours is getting sent off. I'll just explain this with a case -
Lets say your centre back (and best defender) is the one who's sent off. Now, one of your forward's got to replace this centre back. Even if your forward's good at tackling, he's obviously not gonna be as good as your best defender, which means having your forward at the centre back position is not a good move.
So, you might have to make an alternative tactic wherein you put your second-best defender as your centre back, and move the forward (who's replaced your sent off defender) away to a such a defensive position where he's not going to have to tackle a lot (since your forward may not be good at defending).
I know that was quite long, but I hope that helped. Thanks ;)

And...when you get a red card, then apart from all this i just said, just pray that the SIM Gods are on your side ;)

What I meant is you can actually make a “rule” in your tactics to help offset this happening.
Example:
You defender is red carded and sent off. Your lowest shirt numbered striker will go into his position automatically. Knowing this though. You can make a rule: at any time > if a player is sent off > make substitution (that striker) > for whichever defender or midfield you choose on your bench.
That way you still play with 10 players but you at least will then have a defender playing in the defence or midfielder which is much better than your striker playing there. 😊
