My question below :)

How are placings determined in the knockout round of a Cup after losing?

Example: Make the final 16 of a Cup but lose in that round. How is it determined if you come 9th-16th?

Thank you in advance

I, honestly, tried to figure it out.. Did math on paper for 3 hours, checked Internet (maybe it is some kind of official formula), but didn't crack the code. Took one cup for example, thought I understand the picture, checked another and my earlier discovery made no sense.

I forwarded the question.

Yeh I thought it might even go off something as ridiculous as total goals scored in the cup to determine positions.

I’m yet to crack the code too and was curious

I got answer from Maria (credits to her).
She copied me the Official Cups FAQ (click on official cups, open some kind of cup, there you see question mark (labeled "Cup Formats") near title.

"Knockout Play

Knockout ties consist of one-off matches between two teams that have been drawn to play each other. If the match isn’t won in normal time, it is decided by “golden goal” extra time (the first team to score during extra time wins the game) or, if no golden goals are scored in extra time, a penalty shootout. The winning team progresses to the next round while the losing team is eliminated and plays no more part in the competition. The last two teams left in the tournament contest the final and the winner of that match wins the cup. Depending on the competition’s settings, the two losing semi-finalists sometimes take part in a 3rd-Place Play-Off while the remaining positions are calculated using the following “tie breakers”: round reached, goal difference over all knockout rounds, goals scored in all knockout rounds, random draw."

Thank you! I assumed it must have been something like this.

Thanks again :)

First cup i analyzed, there i understood the formula, how 9th to 16th were calculated.

There 16th and 15th were teams who lost their 16-teams game at home, they scored 0 goals. That was factor for last places.

Then 9th and 10th were teams from knock-out leg of 5th place .

Then formula checked leg of 6th place - there he gave 11th place.
And so on..
On that cup placements were decided like ping-pong - i see logic, but it is not rule.

And that logic didn't match with second cup I checked, so I guess random draw is the keyword.
If someone wants to be unhappy about random draw, he can, but it really won't change anything.. 9th to 16th did same good; 9th or 16th - doesn't matter - these are just numbers.
