A history of MZ (imho)

Badge image
Here is how MZ used to be around 2003 and forward:

- Topstakes (betting for top league matches, lots of cheating);
- You had to play 5 sets of friendlies for 9 form (no games on Saturday, not sure about FLs though);
- Physio (don't remember what it used to do);
- Coaches' contract would never expire, lower salary too, hard to sign them up though;

- Could be NC without CM;
- No Mid and ENd of season bonuses;
- Cool Cup prizes, I believe there was like an Ipad or Ipod at somepoint...
- Aikaik was just a regular user and there was no express in thunder;

- League games were once a week only;
- Formula 1 option;
- No Federations;
- No world league, or youth leagues/cups;

- Almost daily 5000+ users online;
- Couldn't login because MZ servers crashed;
- Initially all league games in the world (I think) would play at the same time, I believe early 2003? MZ servers crashed often and league games delayed on regular basis;
- NO Deterioration; No way to share maxings either (yay);

- Old training field (deeply missed by me, it was so intuitive);
- Back in 2003 what set MZ apart from it's direct competition, it was better design and 2D/3D), possibly the training system too;
- Great rivalry between users;
- Each player would have a different birthday through out the season;

- Coaches didn't display age (I might be wrong on this one);
- No PowerTokens;
- There was nothing else better than CM that you could buy;
- Almost each country had it's own admin team (MA, GA, FA, RA, LA);

- There was no superdad, aurelia, civilia, theunloyalone, worstplayerever (Aussie), you know, the usual annoyances;
- No kangaroo jokes on the forums;
- Back in the day, no option to edit your own posts... (wait a sec...)
- MZ China was a different entity, a separate website from MZ; (sidestory MZ China and regular MZ join, turns out almost every freaking chinese user had a few superstars in his team, because they were able to buy them with real money, that's how it worked in MZ China, so we were all losing to Chinese teams... just as we do now... people were so pissed)

- A few times the servers crashed, and some of us could not login to arrange all the 5 sets of friendlies and the form was taking a hit, and guess what, we didn't complain like the kids today...

- The form was recalculated every Monday;
- 2003 or so, newspapers/blogs etc would write articles about MZ, it was revolutionary
- Most countries had an active THe Zone;
- Before China joined, Sweden teams had the most advantage in the game, due to more and older users and better pool of players as well as money... the game initially debuted in Sweden only.

- The crew (no Thunder, aik, poweder back then) back in 2003 changed the sim mid World Cup, just before Sweden played quarters or the semi-finals, and somehow, Sweden's coach managed to find the right tactic and win the world cup.

- You had to pay to view 2D and later 3D, but friends could give you the link to watch your own games... (they were smart, but we were smarter lol)

Enough for now.

Wow... good thread but one things that caught my eye is the MZ origin, is it really from China? or developed in Sweden? I never knew this.

Didn't know that MZ China was a different entity back then, wow interesting fact.

This!

I've often said that training graphs were the death of community in MZ.

Back in the day the only way to build a top tier squad was by wheeling and dealing in guestbooks (being NC didn't hurt either)

MEATWALL

No league rebalancing, so all new teams got forced up the same side of the pyramid. The only way to get to Div1.2 or 1.3 was to get to the EPL and get relegated. Resulted in some insanely tough leagues. Good communities though.

They went through a stage in 2003 where you had to pay just to sign up. Dropped fairly quickly I think.

Text only match reports.

Season 15 China merge with Superplayers.

U18 Leagues and Cups were done unofficially through friendly matches and managed on external sites.

"U18 Leagues and Cups were done unofficially through friendly matches and managed on external sites"

Very troublesome and tiring procedure this one
Sometimes just finishing a cup round could take forever
But in the end, it was all worth it because of this: "Good communities though"

Meatwall:
Using this tactic was frowned upon in the greek community, even in the top league (at least up to the point I was stil playing mz), and could even mean disqualification for your team in the unofficial cups that got run through booking friendlies once each week (iirc)

Re: A history of MZ (imho)

There was also no TC back then and yeah... my options were either to adjust my tactics
and analyze my matches or write this so... there it is. lol

Aik should give the oldies some free gifts or something...

Re: A history of MZ (imho)

Anyways, I just remembered this, for one of the early versions of the SIM, check this out, MZ actually paid one soccer player to tell them how soccer works and stuff.. so the Sim would turn out more realistic...

I don't make this up.

There were no physio's in 2003. They were added later and removed a few seasons later. Players had no maxings back in those days and in order to prevent them from deteriorating you just simply removed them from the training field

Hey dude, you still kicking? One day I might win it, it has never been a top objective... MZ Canada was a nice community, we used to have Markland, bayburt and lam complaining all the time, but otherwise, it was a lot of fun.

I am still debating if I should buy all your team, like a buffet, and just fire them all. Cause I got the coins and Naughty sheep they are!

I have this memory that back in the day, MZ had their in house servers... anybody can confirm that? It was a terrible idea, the servers were full, it was a huge mess, I am talking here 2003 or so.

Anybody know if Welsh user martinwarnett is still banned? From what I remember the mods banned him until 2038 for his posts on the forum lol. This was back when the community was really active.

Back around 2010 we had enough users just in Yorkshire to start a Yorkshire friendly league. The community was amazing back in those days.
I also remember the terrible team you started with when first signing up. Basically a team of 25 year olds with the same amount of balls as a 3rd year youth player

Hold on a sec, you can get banned for forum posts? for years?

I don't know what kind of exceptions have Aurel and Evosa for me, but I am sure I am hitting all of them. At once. Cool guys indeed. When I am sleeping peacefully at night, my nightmare is that those two get retired and the next forum cop bans me just for signing my name.

Martin was a legend, he got banned too soon though...

Also, the stadium looked like crap back in the day. You were in top division, and had the right stadium, but it looked like it was in division 8 in real life.

Anyways, we are closer to 2038 now, then we were when martin got banned. Should go by fast...

Even much better prizes then IPad or Ipod!!!
For example: Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Sony PSP Go or Xbox, but this is nothing compared to this:
1. 10- days trip onto Brazilian island Ilha Grande. (Cup only for managers from Sweden - VM-Cup)
2. New Peugeot 206. (Cup only for managers from Equador - Copa Movistar)
3. Trip with Real Equador National Team to next World Cup Qualification Match (Second Place prize in Copa Movistar)
4. Trip onto English Premier League match for 4 people including Hotel and Fly and Match Tickets (Cup only for managers from Sweden - Expressens EM-cup)
5. New Kia Picanto 1 gen. in Copa Bellsouth for managers from Equador. This Picanto:

It wasn't 2003. MZ China started as separate website in 2004 or 2005.

I can also add a Fun Fact: At the very beginning Managerzone was only a diploma work and anything more, but the author and his friends decided otherwise.

In some point all managers in MZ had same presentation, a presentation of Polish manager called skatepej...:)

Ahhhhh those were the days! I've only just checked the forums today for the first time in probably 3-4 months? It used to be 3 times a day at the very least. How sad it's become.

Side note: How good was it having WAP and checking your scores after a league match. And the secret matches (before scout matches were invented). Feels like forever ago that we had tosspot, dragons, harrycool, etc in the Aus community. I'm coming up to about 14-15 years now.

Re: A history of MZ (imho)

Badge image
And for what it's worth, I'd have kept writing, editing, producing the whole Aussie Zone on my own if i never got booted from the position because of power-hungry mods. Was a bit of a farce at the time, but that was more than 5 years ago now. I think the communities died pretty shortly after.

Re: A history of MZ (imho)

The community aspect was awesome. Now, its different, the private chat which I like took away from the forums, and its just not that many people interested in reading my nonsese. Which makes me think that humanity evolved a little bit in the last while.

ROFL. This could very well be my favorite comment of this year on the forums.

The racoon doesn't seem to get my jokes either, and keeps trying to bite me. I feel superior, that's for sure.

Those were the days. MZ Mail, oh lord, that was a fun way to loose your facebook account. Back then the competition was very hard though and harder to actually learn the game. Nowadays there are a ton of tutorials. Oh, and the forums. You were away for a weekend and you had two pages of unread posts after. Oh man oh man, what about the actual legends on the forums like a decade ago? Fun times.

Re: A history of MZ (imho)

I first joined in 2006, playing until maybe 2014. Some of the things that were different from around that time:

- Inflated transfer market. In 2007 I sold an 18 y/o striker, maxed in 8 shooting for £850,000.
- Everyone had a 'Project Player'. It rarely worked out.
- Transfers and matches were the only ways to make money.
- Doubles were essential.
- I'm sure there were unofficial black lists floating around for the managers who lied about maxings
- No deterioration. You weren't competitive in any league unless you had a team packed with players on the edge of retirement
- Very active community, forums alive and lots of funny characters
- No badge editor. You weren't someone unless you had a badge for your WFO made by Dagefra
- Taking 5 real years to make it to div.2
- Everyone hated Chesham
- Crossballs meant nothing. They seem to have gone through a re-brand.
- I seem to remember a short lived scheme where you could buy team money through text message. I'm sure it was exploited.
- The excitement of a good manager starting an 'I'm Selling Up' forum thread.

I'm sure there's tons more.

Haha, that's a good call! Forum posts at random that first person to ask could have one, or other competitions... He produced some extraordinary work.

A contentious bit of history, maybe it still happens, maybe not: The occasional "invasion" of English forums by multiple foreign types in a short space of time, all shouting and swearing about claims of sovereignty over islands that didn't belong to them. That was a thing for quite a while, jajaja :)

Hah I remember the South American invasions onto the forums. I also remember the English user jaysargey go on a one man crusade over to the Argentinian forums to troll them back armed with nothing but Google translate :)
