Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations of t

Badge image
The following is a reprint from the admin forum.

We are looking for retired Legendary Players from around the world.

Who would be part of the best XI from Argentina, Brazil, Sweden or any country in our beautiful game?

Who would be part of the best XI in a combined Euro XI vs the Rest of the World?

Who would be part of the best XI in England vs Germany?

We want to hear from the Zones and we want to see stories asking your communities who their best XI (and substitutes) would be.

They must be retired Players and they must have a story. It could be Ben Chepchumba, or Eden Schutt, or anyone. Their stories may be well know, or their stories may be awaiting discovery and publication.

They don't have to have the highest skills, they must have the best stories...

We would like to see special edition Zones created as quickly as possible, and/or articles in soon to be published Zones.

You never know what could come from this, it could be legendary....

Displaying skillers for retired players requires putting them together manually the old fashioned method offsite and sharing the link.

A while back we had a discussion among the aussie community with the following thread

http://www.managerzone.com/?p=forum&sub=topic&topic_id=11089249&forum_id=10&sport=soccer

you can refresh yourself should you like

But I'm sure that we have a bunch of great players that have retired in the recent 4-5 seasons to add to the pool and form a very competitive side

I'll summarise the best 4 players from our old generation

Jessop Howard
http://mzplayer.se/?id=0227074498

Cullen Rowden
http://mzplayer.se/?id=0227072729

Munroe Waterland
http://www.mzplus.com.ar/p?id=ClISo1

Brian Beattie
http://www.mzplus.com.ar/p?id=4FRKfT

But if we can find a skiller for Bickford Bundy, Elliot Cuddihy, Murdock Rizzardo. Along with those players that have a great story to tell, whose skills were perhaps not the best like the Famous name of Downing Beer.

Now I'm sure with managers leaving the game lately that we have lost access to many of our great past players. But let's see what we can put together from those that remain.

So I've raided my retired players list and this is all of them. The player with the best story would be Brant Rann, he has to be the most prolific Div 1 scorer in MZAustralia history. He made his A-League debut well into his 30's, at the lower level he was unstoppable, but Ashby scored more in the A-League.

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Well I got none so far so sad

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Badge image
Downing Beer. Best keeper I ever had. Name says it all.

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Badge image
A couple more I can think of are Ryan Pincini - He was the starting NT winger for a long long time and retired age 38 at Bondi Icebergs with an A-League and National Cup title double in his final season

Roger Miller - A Defensive stalwart, playing in the midfield, central or wide defense he was the reliable stopper with high skills every NT side needs. His 5 PI was his only draw back, but he was 9 in speed, stamina, passing, BC, Tackling and AP. The boy could play

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Badge image
So to breakdown candidates for our legendary side by position

Strikers - Ivan Hogan (mythical striker from the long distant past), Bickford Bundy, Jessop Howard, Bud Waterland, Oliver Ashby, Brant Rann

Wingers - Ryan Pincini, Dane Cowdell (he never played for the NT, but as a club player he moved from the centre of defensive to end his career on the wing, he's one of a few rare players to have scored from directly from a corner)

Attacking Midfielders - Murdock Rizzardo (I've placed him here because he was the most well rounded player the national team ever had, he could do it all and was played as the link between midfield and attack later in his NT career. But he could have played as a Central defender, let's just say he was versatile)

Central Midfielders - Cullen Rowdon

Defenders/Defensive Midfielders - Brian Beattie, Roger Miller, Connor Limmer

Goalkeepers - Elliot Cuddihy and Downing Beer

We are a bit light on defenders and defensive Mids. Who else knows of our great and unheralded defensive stoppers and distributors. In attack the side looks good.

Ivan Hogan still tops the records for most goals scored at a world cup. But we may not have his player ID, if we did it would be great to see him line up next to Bickford Bundy in attack with Rizzardo playing support as the CM Playmaker backed up by Rowdon and Brain Beattie.

Two more eligible players recently retired

Belton Fordham id: 158409842 - great winger

Sabastian Barling id: 158410381 - could play forward or back equally well

Murdock Rizzardo id: 127548424

Roger Miller id: 145784647

All these guys played NT in the pre training 2.0 era

Irwin Finden is still Australia'a all time leading NT scorer in cups. He was the highest of any player until he was overtaken in the last 12 months.

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Badge image
Dane James sold for $13,000,000 back in the day. He'd be worth $13.00 in todays market.

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Ryan Pincini was brilliant, I bought him as a broken down old man at the age of 34, for over 2,000,000 hoping I'd get 1 more season out of him before retirement, but the old bloke just kept giving and giving and retired with grace at the ripe old age 38. Value for money.

I'd wish I had Kuch in the team now for his obvious wing play abilities. He was a man before his time, when there was no wing play, and he was most probably a wasted talent in a talentless squad. Skurrie was rock steady Mr reliable.

I'm going to pull out a number of past players with still accessible Player ID's from the annuls of MZ Australian history and see anyone remembers them.

Sadly the Ivan Hogan and all players from the 2005 World Cup squad are inaccessible as the match data cannot be accessed. Most of the 2006 squad have dissappeared as well, but I'll list those still accessible.

That's the history of the national team. Only retired players can make this team of legends and those that do require a good story to get them in. Make your pitches for your favourite players and have fun :)

Though remember selection isn't restricted to former NT players only, it's the story that counts.

I remember the name Hal Guy. He was the best goalkeeper in A-league for a long time. Can't remember who he played for - got a feeling it was either Duffield or Harry Cool.

If I were picking, I'd say the first thing is we should play something super-attacking since many of our stories are about strikers...Maybe 3-4-3 ?

GK - Hal Guy (Most NT cup games, pretty sure he may have bribed patrick with jumpers to "run an update" aka get patrick to break Berry Beverleys legs with a wooden plank, so that he could hold onto his record)

Def - Martin Cusbert (Hoff controversially selected his own player ahead of Bundy in 2011 to play as a striker because Cusbert had more tackling. I figure he was such a good tackler why not put him in defence)
Def - Bishop Lawrence (3rd most NT cup games and a name I remember, but I have no interesting story here. Most NT cup yellow card with 8)
Def - Brian Beattie

DM - Berry Beverley (See above, also I think he was like 20 when he was first picked in the starting XI of the NT, let alone making the squad. Played his last NT game at like 40 something)

CM - Eden Schutt (Has to be in somewhere but he was before my time)
CM - Cullen Rowden

(I want to include these 4 players and cheat by having one play AM, but without the skillers its hard to know who would play there)
AM/ST - Murdock Rizzardo (This was his performance in the 2013 confed cup knockout stages - round of 16 came on as a sub 66 mins in and scored an 84th minute winner against Ecuador, quarter finals came on in the 80th minute and scored an 89th minute winner against Paraguay, semi final scored a hat-trick against Colombia, final scored 4 goals against Uruguay. In ~ 214 minutes of football he scored 9 goals, that's a goal every 24 minutes)
AM/ST - Bickford Bundy (Won multiple youth league MVP's back when that was a thing and capitalized on the hype to become one of our most well known players despite in the end not a hugely successful career. I won't write too much since he was my own player and everything)
AM/ST - Ivan Hogan (Before my time nod to our most successful world cup run)
AM/ST - Irwin Finden (All-time leading goalscorer for Australia and 5th most goals in NT tournaments worldwide. Had an interesting career, spent most of it with mid-table A-league team OzForce before heading to China then crossing to arch rival Crimson Eagles to finish up a winner...Well I think he won something while there ?)

Thanks Themey. Yeah definitely from another era, pre value adjustments, he has to play regardless of what his skill actually are. It'd be like seeing Bobby Charlton step on to the pitch or Dennis Lillee roll his arm over once more.

I like the team Dagg has selected in a short passing formation. Should Eden Schutt never be found then one of Bo Boylin or Berke Kean will replace him in the starting XI and the other take up the midfield bench spot.

Bo Boylin played 30 official cup games to sit 4th in the all time list of official games played
Berke Kean played more NT freindlies though with 160 to sit 5th on the australian list

Both had long careers in the NT

On the bench in Goalkeeping position is either Paz Beattie, Elliot Cuddihy or Downing Beer

On games played Paz is 2nd only to Hal Guy in official games played for the NT by a goalkeeper and 2nd overall behind Munroe Waterland the total amount of freindly games played. Combining both cup and freindly games played and he has the most caps for the NT of all time.

Elliot Cuddihy was in goals when Australia won the Confed Cup taking over from Paz Beattie during the campaign who sat on the bench in a changing of the guard. In his club career he won just about everything with Arrested Developers

Downing Beer Perhaps the greatest name to ever be bestowed upon a player pre name change era, wasn't a bad keeper either, but never got a look in with the NT. A great club player though

The choice of bench strikers - one spot available

Munroe Waterland played the most friendly games for the NT with 178

Jessop Howard played for Glasston during a their golden age of A-League success

Brandon Pickhills began on the bench didn't start to often but if you wanted an impact player late in the game their were few better than Pickhills. During the Winning Confed Cup run was his swan song.

Now the choice of Bench Defenders we only have one spot available

Nilson Gruer - 28 official cup games
Fabrizio Whitmore - 30 official cup games

Roger Miller - 27 official cup games, 132 NT friendly games

The first two are the old school and and played in the Bishop Lawrence, not much is remembered about them but they all had long careers in the NT. Roger Miller began his NT Career as part of the Confed Cup winning side playing an intergral role as a defensive midfielder, but he was a great stopper that could also pass so a bench spot in legendary defense is well worth his service.

Wingers

Should we play wings, then it's difficult to go past Ryan Pincini as the starting winger. 143 friendly games for the NT and an integral member of Confed Cup winning team as the starting winger. Played until he was 38 and won the League/Cup double with Bondi in his final season after transferring from Arresteed Developers age 34.

There is only one other winger in contention and that's Belton Fordham. He got his start in the 2014 world Cup qualifiers and had a short NT career as the reintroduction of deteriorations crippled both his and Pincini's late careers. But if Pincini starts then Fordham is the only candidate for his bench replacement

With those additions we have a good Legendary squad that could play both short passing ans wings. With a good balance of players only remembered by our parents and more recent great retirees

For anyone interested the following is a copy/paste job from Eden Schutts MZ wiki page (I can only get the source code, not the actual page itself)

Eden Schutt was an Australian footballer, famous for his stint at EF Renoresa Psygi, where he was the club's most prominent galactico.

Signing on January 1, 2004 for a then club and Scottish record fee of 593 576 GBP for EF Renoresa Psygi. He scored a Scottish Premier League record 7 goals on his club debut and led Psygi to their first title in the clubs history with his 39 goals in 14 matches. His name began to make the front pages as well as the back pages of the local tabloids after various run-ins with the media and sightings in nightclubs just hours before a match. His playboy lifestyle was making him famous throughout ManagerZone and his name was become more known for his behaviour off the field than on the field.

Controversy
Eden Schutt's most famous outburst came on QANTAS Flight 1609 when making his way to Australian for an International Friendly. Rumours are that he was drunk inside an hour of the flight taking off and that he made several passes towards flight attendants. He was also seen coming out of a toilet cubicle seconds after Australian singer and actress Holly Valance was seen coming out of the same cubicle, where he claimed to the be "the greatest lover in the world" in a drunken outburst.

He also attempted to enter the cockpit to endeavour to fly the plane in his altered state.

He played in the friendly just 24 hours later and scored in Australia's 5-1 win over the Czech Republic.

Life At Psygi
The young Schutt was taken under the wing of then fans favourite Raphael Sannen and was the subject of masses of rash challenges in his early seasons at Psygi. He became to stamp his authority on matches with sublime performances against some of the greatest sides in ManagerZone history. He famously led Psygi almost single handledly into the last 32 of the Football Mania Cup and has the accolade of scoring into almost every side he has ever played against.

Schutt was constantly linked with moves to sides in both Sweden and England, he was considered to be on par with legendary striker Jonatan "The Flash" Lindgren of Hawkmoon United on both ability and marketing potential.

Life After Psygi
After Smith's departure, Eden Schutt was sold to Cardiff City Java Coders for £1.6 million. His wild antics were calmed down after leaving Psygi and failed to settle in Wales. After playing in the 4th Division of the Polish Leagues, he had a bried stint at then Argentine Division 2 side Moe Juniors before transferring to Maltese side Marsascala Bulldogs 06 days before retiring at the end of season 24. On the 14th October 2006, Schutt married stripper Tanya Stewart. Together they run a male hair-care company called Gear and they had their first child in mid-2007."

Trivia
Eden Schutt was reccommended by managers chrisboston and rama2000. User bk911 claimed that Eden Schutt could be "the Beckham of MZ"

There have been various mis-spellings of his name by users throughout ManagerZone. "Edun Schutt" to "Eden Shutt" and threads were created on a near-weekly basis asking "Who is Eden Schutt?".

Eden Schutt's photographs are actually of Hawthorn Hawks player, Trent Croad. Also a outspoken and somewhat controverisal character.

On the guys who are from the 2013 confed cup team

At backup keeper I think even at the time Cuddihy was more well known than Paz Beattie, Paz spent his career abroad meanwhile Cuddihy obviously spent his career on a successful Arrested Developers side.

Pickhills was good enough to start, from memory he had like 9 shooting and 9 tackling so we preferred to have him come off the bench and either sub on as a striker (If we needed a goal) or defender (If we were winning and wanted to protect the lead). In that run I think he exclusively played as a bench defender in the end.

Miller and Pincini were both key components of the run. With those two, Colling and Didlock we basically had a bunch of guys who could play anywhere but striker on the pitch. Didlock was really young (like 22) don't know how people used him since (And he hasn't retired anyway).

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

So the Legends squad as it currently stands

Keeper - Hal Guy, Downing Beer

Further additions - Both Elliot Cuddihy and Paz Beattie deserve a spot in this team.

Cuddihy for being in goals when the NT won the Confed Cup and having his name adorn the A-League Clean Sheet award.

Paz for being the all-time leader for games played in an Australian NT jersey, it's true his club career was spent for the majority overseas. But his longevity means he deserves a spot in this side.

Defenders - Martin Cusbert, Brian Beattie, Berry Beverley, Bishop Lawrence

Further additions - Roger Miller, Brandon Pickhills (utility).

Miller for reasons listed above, he's the most well known defender of the recent era.

Pickhills would join Cusbert as the second utility player in the squad who could play forward or back depending on curcumstances.

Midfielders - Berke Kean, Bo Boylin, Donovan Kuch (winger)

Further additions - Cullen Rowdon, Ryan Pincini (winger), Russ Colling.

How Rowdon is not in the team is beyond me. In a world where top players are traded through 5-7 clubs in their career he was a one club guy, playing for Glasston from youth to retirement with his entire career spent in the A-League and the centre of Midfield for the NT. For these reasons his name adorns the A-League MVP award and he has to make the side.

Pincini began life as a Plainland youth before a controversial trade to arrested developers in 2012 contributed to Plainland as a team ceasing to exist. At Arrested Developers Pincini won the A-League treble along with a host other titles, played a pivotal role in the Confed Cup victory and ended his career at Bondi with a League/Cup double in his final season age 38.

Not much is rememebered about Russ Colling as he was an unassuming fellow, but damn the could he play. A versatile swingman with with a football and the saxophone off field, he oozed cool through his laid back attitude. He was the John Paul Jones of the national team, willing to let others have the spotlight while being indispensible to the structure of the team.

Strikers - Ivan Hogan, Irwin Finden, Murdock Rizzardo, Bickford Bundy

Further additions - Munroe Waterland, Jessop Howard.

Munroe Waterland for representing the NT in more friendlies games than any other player in Australian NT history. He was the ultimate team player and for this reason has the overall A-League Team Award named after him. With 10 PI he was smart enough not to back pass the ball when one on one with the keeper, yet knew when a pass was the better option than a shot. He was the Raul of Australian Football.

Jessop Howard - the name use to strike fear into an opposing A-league team. Along with Cullen Rowdon, Jessop Howard took Glasston on their most successful sustained period of success their club has ever enjoyed. With Rowdon feeding him silky smooth dead weight passes, Jessop was an unstoppable goal scoring wrecking ball.

With these additions the Legends side would be complete. We've never had one but if we did these guy would be the the initial inductees to our Hall of fame

Write up his story and crew may include him in the team.

Since we already have 2 legendary keepers from the past, Cuddihy and Beattie may miss out.

Similarly Pickhills and Miller may have wait until they are past 40. As these games look like they will take place next season and from the looks of the players they've included no one is as yet younger than 39, meaning players will all be 40+ when the games are played.

The squad is looking good

Judging by the approach crew have taken, with Ben Chepchumba and Eden Schutt being examples of legendary players, to me it's more about a celebrity team than a greatest of all time team. We have Cusbert as a defender as a bit of a joke selection and a nod to the hoff/damo rivalry that seemed to dominate the community for acouple of years. I think we need Schutt in the team, I'm under the impression in 2006ish he was basically the most famous player in the game courtesy of bessie (If there was a "legendary bessie team" Schutt would be picked, would any other Aussies ?). Obviously there is a 5 striker issue there, I think Bundy and Rizzardo each had 9 passing so it isn't a massive stretch to have them both as AM's though.

I've been told that the original Eden Schutt can't be found like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Also something is wrong with Rizzardo as none of his international stats with the national team are accessible, he simply doesn't show up on any of the NT honorb boards which is really strange. I can only hazard a guess that it's because he was released from his last club, so he's currently a retired free agent without a club.

Yeah the idea is some fun exhibition matches to watch a few greats of the past play with some more recent retirees and a few obscure guys. Sort of like the Channel 9 legends game of footy they play once a year for charity.

I'm writing up the bios of the players currently selected, hopefully they'll be done by next week.

So the initial group of inductees to the legends team has been decided. Crew will setup up the tactic, but we need to decide who plays where and what formation we play. As you can see we've selected an attacking squad, little on defenders and midfielders. Lucky a few strikers are quite good at tackling so we've multi positional players that can adapt to whatever role we assign them.

We need a nice looking tactic image to show crew the formation we want to play, the mentality and pressing tactic options, as well as where each player will be placed

All the legendary tactics I've seen so far are running short passing down the middle with 3 strikers, 3 mids and 4 defenders covering the wings. Mentality is varied, same goes for pressing.

Re: Legendary/retired players for Australia/the smaller nations

Badge image
We have 5 choices

Option 1 - wing defence, wing attack

5 defenders
3 mids
winger
striker

Option 2 - wing defence, wing attack

4 defenders
3 mids
winger
2 strikers

Option 3 - Wing defence, Short passing attack (what most countries will run)

4 defenders
3 mids
3 strikers

Option 4 - Short passing defence, wing attack

5 defenders
2 mids
winger
2 strikers

Option 5 - Short passing defence, short passing attack

5 defenders
2 mids
3 strikers

Regardless of which tactic option we pick we will have - Hal Guy in goals/ Beer on the bench, because their aren't many of them all our defenders and mids guaranteed a starting spot, with Rizzardo or Colling likely to play in the midfield.

Which leaves how we want to attack. I'd suggest subbing our front 3 off around half-time, with either a winger and 2 strikers or 3 strikers.
