It would be convenient to be able to import one of my saved tactics exclusively into an alternative formation in a different tactic slot, without altering the starting formation.
Locking an alternative formation so that the imported tactic doesn't affect it would also work.

You can probably manipulate the XML to be able to do this.

Do you know how? I've tried to delete the 'TacticRule' where it says to change to the alternative formation but it still has it saved there automatically when I import. I can't find where alternative formations themselves are in the XML.

I don't think it can be done because alternative tactics don't have XMLs. Typically, if you have tactic that has never had any done in the alternative tactic and the link is closed, the alternative tactics will be exactly the same as the starting tactic. In other words with a closed link you can change your starting tactic with changes in the alternative because they are all on the same XML.
I have never tried this but you might these steps as a means to import a tactic to the alternative tactic. That is if you have a tactic slot you can play around with.
1. If you want to save your starting tactic, copy and past the XML to a Word document...then clear the tactic from the tactic slot.
2. Make sure the link is closed...then import the XML of a tactic into the starting tactic...then save. This tactic should also be showing in both of the alternative tactics.
3. Open the link...then copy and paste the XML of the original tactic you saved in a Word document. With the open link that shouldn't disturb the other tactics in alternative 1 and 2.
Like I said I have never tried it so no guarantees.

I got up to step 3 but as soon as I pasted in the original XML the link automatically closed and the alternative formations became the same as the starting.

Well, it was a good try. Then it won't work...unless someone else has a solution.

So can this be looked into? Would save a bit of bother.
Thanks for the help regardless.

When they do testing of the new/patched sim, I will suggest for them to look at making it possible to import/export alternative formations.

is there a way to copy a tactic so that tactic A and B are identical with the exception of maybe 1 player who has been withdrawn do to form (overplayed)?

Yes. Just copy and paste XML from A to B, or vice versa...then remove the 1 player.
