I think the last 5 years has seen lots of excellent films released, if not always to much attention...
Coherence ................ A bit of a thinker/mind-bender but I liked a lot
Safety Not Guaranteed .... Beautiful film
Another Earth ............ Very subdued/low-key but pretty powerful
The Guest ................ Stylish, excellent soundtrack, good action
Cake ..................... Another subdued drama but very good
This Is The End .......... One of the funniest films
It Follows ............... Unusual, spooky, excellent style and soundtrack
Predestination ........... Another somewhat mind-bending, intriguing
Enemy .................... And another
Boyhood .................. Deserved the acclaim
Cheap Thrills ............ Pretty original, mad, funny
John Wick ................ Along with The Guest, the best and most stylish action film of recent times. Great cast, and Keanu Reeves suits it since minimal acting range required

A little mention for Knock Knock, because it's a pretty shit film but god if you find Keanu Reeves trying to portray emotions funny, which you should... it's got a lot of moments of proper hilarity. And the ending, where it even loses it's own sense of seriousness, is excellent.

I second any mention The Place Beyond The Pines too.

I also liked the re-work of RoboCop. Quite different to the original, and nowhere near as supreme/classic, but it's about the same in my regard as RoboCop 2 and obviously a hell of a lot better than RoboCop 3, the TV series, the TV movies, the cartoon, etc...

Oh and Noah, although very flawed and Darren Aronofsky's weakest film, was better than it's reputation, I think.

Some I watched recently that I liked.

What we do in the shadows - Hilarious fake documentary about the life of 3 vampires that share a flat.

Open Grave - It's about a guy that wakes up with no memory in a pit full of corpses, can't say more without spoiling the movie.

Time Lapse - About some guys that find a camera that takes pictures 24 hours in the future

O homem do futuro - Pretty cool brazilian movie about a guy with a time machine that wants to change his past, similar to back to the future. I think it's on youtube with english subs (I watched this one by accident and was pleasantly surprised)

Parallels - Not really a movie but a 1 1/2 hour pilot for a series that will probably never come to be, it's on Netflix. It's about some guys that find a building that transports them to alternate universes, it's a weird concept and I think I liked this one because I was expecting it to be crap but it actually was pretty entertaining despite the ridiculous premise of the movie. Would love to see this one go to series though...

I also liked Predestination, It follows & This is the end (best comedy ever) but they where already mentioned.

Now for the worst piece of dreck that I had the unpleasure of actually sitting through the whole movie, the prize goes to Neighbors, I just can't believe people liked this dreadful unfunny movie and they're even making a sequel.

The film "It follows" ...I wasn't a fan of, maybe because I didn't get it... was the monster a metaphor for aids or what?

Re: Any movie advice to watch?

What We Do In The Shadows is awesome, regret forgetting to mention that...

Also worth giving The Babadook a watch. Mixed reactions but I liked it.

I didn't read anything particularly into It Follows, I thought it just held up on the basis of the creeping dread and some spooky scenes. And it got extra points to me for the strange "out-of-time" style (isn't obviously set in modern times), soundtrack and decayed detroit scenery. Plus that I didn't find any of the characters too stupid or dislikeable, which is rare for teen-ish characters in a horror.

I honestly didn't like it, it's a drama about depression disguised as a horror movie, it was well filmed and acted, maybe too well and because of that is that it was just.... depressing, guess it was supposed to be like that, but it's not really a movie I enjoyed.

I wouldn't bother with The Conjuring 2. Green Room was alright. I haven't really been hugely impressed with any film for quite a while. Snowpiercer was bloody mad.

I would probably most recommend "The Final Girls"

A requeim for a dream is my classic of all time. And the wolf of wall street(DiCaprio) is the best of my last watched movies.

Just watched the trailer, looks pretty cool, I see if I can rent it or if netflix has it.

The only movie worth mentioning that I watched lately is Deathgasm, Neozeland Horror Comedy which reminds me of a TV show I used to watch called "Todd and the Book of Pure Evil (also recommended), here's the trailer:

Just watched a good one, went into it without knowing anything about it and I thought it was going to be a lame Friday 13th ripoff, but I was totally wrong...

Re: Any movie advice to watch?

"The House That Jack Built" is pretty good. Darkly humourous in the first half especially. Interesting. Worthwhile.

And "Into The Spiderverse" was good. Should be seen in a cinema really, or on a very good home setup. To me the most amazing visual/audio experience since Tron Legacy. Maybe the only really amazing visual/audio experience since then. Not the greatest story, but good enough to carry it.

Re: Any movie advice to watch?

In the last couple of years also...
Game Night - Funny and entertaining.
Happy Death Day - Quite original and interesting, undermined by a terrible ending.
I liked Suburbicon well enough at cinema, but doubt I'd bother watching again.
The Killing Of A Sacred Deer was great, but then I like the director's style generally (The Lobster and, originally, Dog Tooth).
John Wick 2 - If you like the first, you'll like this.
I liked The Disaster Artist but it's undermined a little by what a nob James Franco was towards Tommy Wiseau at that awards event, stopping him getting to the mic. Twat.

Advice on what not to watch?
The new Predator film. An abomination.
The Fantastic Beasts films. Dreadfully long-winded and dull.

Thanks Jaime, needed something to watch tonight and there's a couple of those I haven't seen yet.... btw, I agree on Happy Death Day, I like this type of light horror / dark comedy type of movies and this was a fun little movie to watch, the ending was kind of crappy but I wasn't expecting a great ending anyway, hoping the sequel doesn't suck too bad though sequels to this type of movie usually they do.

Re: Any movie advice to watch?

There's an alternative ending for Happy Death Day on the DVD/BluRay, and so probably also on youtube by now, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet...
