An Actual National Cup. (With a Plan)

Badge image
I know, I know, we've all heard it before, but I am convinced that an all-out knockout round National Cup that no-one has to pay for will be a huge benefit for this game!

It could be another competition for people to be excited about, more trophies, more matches to look forward too.
Obviously we can't call it the National Cup, but, how about the 'League Cup'? or 'League Knockouts'?... no negative affect on form either.

If we make it so everyone has to play (even the inactive teams) here's how I can imagine the tournament working based on the English Division (some adaptions would have to be made for other countries):

Teams Entered: What teams are entering that round.
No. of Teams: Number of teams that have been entered.
Sum of Round: Total teams in that round.
After: Teams left after a knockout match.

(You may have to enlarge this image to get a clearer look)

The 'Group of 3' determines who would get Bronze, Silver or Gold trophies that Season, not to mention a stonking amount of Team Money. A small bonus of Team Money could be given each round.

I think a Carling/FA-esque Cup would be a lot of fun and give another competitive aspect to this game, which I feel is necessary as this game can drag when you know your league has one team that's going to dominate, leaving you to fight for Play-Offs... that's never a great motivator and would push away the newer players in the more active leagues.

What do you guys and gals think? I would really appreciate feedback on this

Seems a nice idea, since it would give lower division teams a chance to play against higher profile clubs. That would add some motivation indeed.

Pretty much, except the last three teams would have to play in a 3 team group, just to discover the last 3 positions to determine who'd get Bronze, Silver and Gold.

This way absolutely every team from our nation can compete, for free... inactive teams too but they'd soon be knocked out.

And I was thinking of a Team Money prize for each round, like so:

Just some numbers I threw together.

Tyler, I was going to suggest something similar to this a few moments ago! I was wondering whether it would be possible to do a cup where the smaller teams can enter and then have a chance of a cup run. I know with most official cups, the smaller teams get torpedo'ed in the first group stage because they get put against a few of the big boys. Great for the experience and to see what the top teams are like, but it'd also be nice to come up against some of the lower teams to see where you are in terms of your division bracket and how far ahead/behind you are!

Completely have my support with this one - MZ, any chance this can be implemented?

I don't ever think I've seen so much support for an idea before :O thank you all!

Would love to hear if there is anything out there that may prevent this from being a feature in the future.
I know Crew released a free anniversary cup (funnily enough not long after I made this thread haha) but I think a Cup that is running inline with the League would help keep everyone's interest.

Let's face it, a season feels incredibly long when your team's not doing well in the League...
If the League's not going well people can turn their efforts to lasting as long as they can in the Cup, another challenge for managers to prepare for in a season, so it acts as some sort of audience retention too, while also being a bit of awarding fun for the active managers.

Sadly no updates on this... yet. I would truly love for it to happen though and it's so cool to see the number of people that support this suggestion!

It seems like it would easily become a prestigious award and all teams could have a blast competing in it. Managers could develop rivals, there could be many discussions about it too thus having an impact on the forum's activity.

One problem I've foreseen is that many other nations don't have 6 Divisions so my set-up, above in this thread, would not work... however I'm sure if there was interest to make this a thing I would put time towards making similar 'League Knockouts' set-ups for any number of Divisions.

Tyler, I like the idea, but why can't we start all divisions together, and have a straight knockout!I see people giving good feedback and I like it to but to give the small team to play against a top team they have to go through 9/10 rounds how many div 5/6 teams will you see after round 4 A very few I think, but if you start all in round 1 it will really make it a true English cup,but I will go with the rest, good idea but again very loaded for the big clubs.Bob.

I decided not to start all the divisions at the same time for two reasons:
  1. The set up would be incredibly odd. There's 13,116 teams in a Division 6 Nation which means after 2 rounds we'd have 3279 teams left... which isn't divisible by two, how would the rounds fairly continue without using 'byes'?
  2. Imagine you were in the Premier League and in the First Round you get drawn against, and beaten by, another Premier League squad, wouldn't it be a bit frustrating to be knocked out immediately knowing that there's tens of thousands of teams that you could have beat?

Don't you think this is a good thing for smaller teams and newer managers getting into the game? I'm sure they wouldn't want to face Knights of the Spring, Iffley Flaneurs or Protected By Hummingbirds in the very first round and would enjoy facing others around them for the first few rounds.

I will admit it's loaded for the big clubs... but just look at the FA Cup format:
Round 1 Extra Preliminary Round
Round 2 Preliminary Round
Round 3 First Round Qualifying
Round 4 Second Round Qualifying
Round 5 Third Round Qualifying
Round 6 Fourth Round Qualifying
Round 7 First Round Proper
Round 8 Second Round Proper
Round 9 Third Round Proper < (Prem/Cham Teams added)
Round 10 Fourth Round Proper
Round 11 Fifth Round Proper
Round 12 Sixth Round Proper
Round 13 Semi-Finals
Round 14 Final

...there's 8 rounds before the Championship and the Premiership teams are added, similar to mine except the Premier Squads aren't introduced until 2 rounds later.

which can be adjusted ofcourse ^-^

Tyler I think you have a good idea ,and you had put a lot of thought into it,but I still think there's room for a k/o cup where everybody starts from round one,but your cup should take pride of place, how about calling it the mefac( managerzone English football association cup)?,bob.

Re: An Actual National Cup. (With a Plan)

Oooh as two different cups... that could work ^-^

But one problem yours will face is doing a knockout with 13,116 teams. The closest number that can continue to be divided by 2 is 8192... so 4924 expendable inactive teams have to not participate... which I believe could be possible... maybe haha

Cup income, Cup formats and Cup match scheduling are 100% on our list.

We've talked about it in Crew views and other forum posts and when we update the Cup system, it is something that will be addressed.
