The velvet underground!!!!, countless solo albums, has worked with so many artists that one post would not do justice to the people and genres of music that consider him as an influence.

Though being a musician myself maybe I'm biased, but I'm only 28 so not that old.
If you want a seminal album check out
The velvet underground and Nico
His solo album - Transformer
That's just off the top of my head, but to show you his variety and the opinion he is held in, Metallica co-wrote an album with him about 5 years ago

All the first 4 Velvets records are excellent. I was never so interested in his solo stuff, although amongst the older stuff there is some great work in there. The Metallica collaboration was some sort of achievement in that I can't think of any other band or musician I like that has collaborated on or put out something I've found so utterly awful. But hey.
He had a heck of a life, ended sooner than it should have, and may he indeed rest in peace, or however he wants.

Such a shame for a great artist especially his work with Metallica being a major success.
Although his last album "Lulu" was terrible, the man himself was a genius and an inspiration to all musicians.
