Barry Pettifer didn't succeed in stopping the ball in the 2nd minute, which inside left pole to 1-0. When Rod Lawton came up free with the goalie in the 8th minute, the U21 Luxembourg fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Rod Lawton couldn't finish the play. 9 minutes into the match, Rod Lawton notched a goal, 1-1, to the right of U21 Vietnam's Phan Bien. The supporters of U21 Luxembourg booed when U21 Vietnam was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 29 match minutes in a wonderful position. Marcos Salas didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience was convinced that Hồ Hoang's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Barry Pettifer was relentless in the 34th minute of the game. With a little luck, U21 Luxembourg's Barry Pettifer got control of the ball when Hồ Hoang tried to sneak it across the goal line. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.
The wind increased when Hồ Hoang made the kick off in the second half. With an all-out effort, U21 Luxembourg's Phan Bien threw himself towards the right post 51 minutes into the match and grabbed hold of the ball from Rod Lawton, which otherwise would have been placed in the net. Rod Lawton sent away a hard shot on goal in the 52nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Jimmy Le Saux fell near the penalty area in the 60th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored U21 Luxembourg's protests and gave Jimmy Le Saux a yellow card for diving instead. After 64 played minutes, U21 Vietnam's Marcos Salas shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Barry Pettifer came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in U21 Vietnam reached it. U21 Vietnam's Phan Bien played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rod Lawton in the 67th minute of play. After 81 minutes of play, U21 Luxembourg's Rod Lawton made it 2-2 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Phan Bien was left in no man's land by his defense there! Barry Pettifer showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Hồ Hoang in the 85th minute of the match. Phan Binh received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 90th minute. Barry Pettifer tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere.
