In the 23rd minute Cayetano Reyes shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cesar Batres saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Xove Herrera's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Cesar Batres read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 24th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Misael Cerna in the 29th minute of play forced Spain's goalkeeper Playo Bermejo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 30 minutes into the match, Spain's Xove Herrera sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Cesar Batres narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The Spain fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Playo Bermejo should have stopped the shot. Cesar Batres took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Jair Domínguez, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 92 minutes into the game, Patricio Umanzor threw the ball into play from the sideline. Spain's Xandro Roman quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Cesar Batres stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Jair Domínguez's shot from short distance in the 95th minute. Guatemala's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
