The audience thought a goal was coming when Vladimir Kizhik got free with Enrique Frederick in the 2nd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Vadim Eristavi's late challenge caught a U21 Canada's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Vadim Eristavi helped the player get up and apologised. Enrique Frederick made a fantastic save in the 9th minute, when Vladimir Kizhik sent off a good shot on target. Nikolay Velikanov made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jarrett Melendez in the 15th minute of play. The supporters of U21 Canada booed when U21 Russia was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Vadim Eristavi didn't get a good kick on the ball. Nikolay Velikanov showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jarrett Melendez, who was totally free with the ball in the 18th minute. Jarrett Melendez fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 22nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Nikolay Velikanov having to interfere. In the 25th minute of the game Gonzalo Fremont made a throw-in which Edgardo Gold played forward. After 32 minutes of play, U21 Canada's Jarrett Melendez made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Nikolay Velikanov was left in no man's land by his defense there! The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Marty Ogden during the 37th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, U21 Canada's Marty Ogden got a free kick in the 37th minute. In the 46th match minute, U21 Canada was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Beau Aubé to maneuver through the defense. U21 Canada's Eugène Pitts was substituted for Edgardo Gold. U21 Canada's Lanny Gagnon was substituted for Marty Ogden. Beau Aubé kicked well hit freekick during the 48th minute of the match. When the match had been going on for 48 minutes Vladimir Kizhik shot a great shot from long distance. It looked like a certain goal, but the audience witnessed a really smashing save by Enrique Frederick when he caught the ball only just under the crossbar. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 0-1.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Darnell Busby to make the kick off. The throw-in from Viktor Hrapchenko in the 53rd minute of the game was unfortunally taken care of by U21 Canada's Ian Marks. After a rather tough play, U21 Canada's Lanny Gagnon got a free kick in the 57th minute. In the 60th minute, Yaroslav Barkashov hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Enrique Frederick came out of the goal in the 62nd minute to try and stop a shot by U21 Russia's Vadim Eristavi. But to his dismay, Vadim Eristavi quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. Enrique Frederick took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Vadim Eristavi, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Vadim Eristavi hit a great freekick 71 minutes into the match. U21 Russia made a substitution. Kirill Uvarov replaced Ilya Loganovskiy. After 73 played minutes U21 Russia got a freekick which was hit by Vadim Eristavi. Vadim Eristavi hit a great freekick 74 minutes into the match. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Jarrett Melendez couldn't finish the play.
