The audience thought a goal was coming when Andrew Griffiths got free with Slavoljub Pivk in the 17th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Kelinu Fenech fell near the penalty area in the 17th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Malta's protests and gave Kelinu Fenech a yellow card for diving instead. Kelinu Fenech kicked well hit freekick during the 18th minute of the match. When Set Fašun came up free with the goalie in the 18th minute, the Slovenia fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Set Fašun couldn't finish the play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Animo Mrvar in the 22nd minute of play forced Malta's goalkeeper Cleaven Trevisan to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Andrew Griffiths could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 26th minute of the match, but Slavoljub Pivk made a huge save. Cleaven Trevisan took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Set Fašun, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 30 played minutes Malta got a freekick which was hit by Andrew Griffiths. After 31 played minutes Slovenia got a freekick which was hit by Egidij Živković. In the 34th minute Set Fašun shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Cleaven Trevisan saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 36th minute, Set Fašun left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Slovenia fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-3. In the 40thth minute of the game Set Fašun who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Malta's Cleaven Trevisan was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After 41 played minutes Malta got a freekick which was hit by Gerard Christophoro. 42 minutes into the match, Malta's goal looked a bit too open when Set Fašun came free, but Cleaven Trevisan reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Animo Mrvar came up free with the goalie in the 46th minute, the Slovenia fans jumped to their feet. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-3 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Set Fašun made a kick off. The audience thought a goal was coming when Set Fašun got free with Cleaven Trevisan in the 51st minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Set Fašun in the 57thth minute had a little luck and got a chance for a shot in front of the goal. Without hesitation aimed to the right of Cleaven Trevisan, who managed to lunge to the right direction and made a save. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Set Fašun in the 59th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Cleaven Trevisan prevented the ball from getting in the gole. The Slovenia fans' excitement grew in the 59th match minute when Slovenia's Set Fašun looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 0-5 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. A hard shot 69 in the game by Set Fašun from a close distance when the talented Cleaven Trevisan managed to make a qualified save. Malta's players were relieved. Malta made a substitution. Lino Balzan replaced Gerard Christophoro. Slovenia's Berni Pratneker was substituted for Egidij Živković. Slovenia made a substitution. Vid Rebec replaced Set Fašun. Slovenia's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Rosando Žefran in the 94th minute. The corner led Slovenia's Hajredin Krempl to fire away a dangerous shot which Cleaven Trevisan despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. The Malta supporters were disappointed that their team didn't take anything from the match, despite matching Slovenia's performance. The match ended with a win for Slovenia.
