In the 15th minute, Eusébio Porto got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. 17 minutes into the match, Eusebiu Pantilimon notched a goal, 0-1, to the right of Portugal's Diamantino Amaro. Diamantino Amaro was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. An unexpectedly hard shot by Eusébio Porto in the 19th minute of play forced Romania's goalkeeper Mădălin Crainic to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Eusebiu Pantilimon's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Diamantino Amaro read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 20th minute of play. With a little luck, Romania's Mădălin Crainic got control of the ball when Eusébio Porto tried to sneak it across the goal line. Portugal's Diamantino Amaro played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Eusebiu Pantilimon in the 25th minute of play. Romania's Mădălin Crainic proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 27th minute of the match, managed to save Romania from getting a goal against them. 29 minutes into the game, Eusebiu Pantilimon cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-2. Diamantino Amaro was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. 33 minutes into the match, Romania's goal looked a bit too open when Alex Miguel came free, but Mădălin Crainic reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Portugal's Alex Miguel got a good chance for a goal in the 36th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. An unexpectedly hard shot by Eusebiu Pantilimon in the 38th minute of play forced Portugal's goalkeeper Diamantino Amaro to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Eusébio Porto had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 43rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 47 minutes into the match, Romania's Eusebiu Pantilimon sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Diamantino Amaro narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 1-2 lead.

Portugal's Paulo Assunção was substituted for Alexandre Neves. When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Eusebiu Pantilimon made a kick off. Mădălin Crainic showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from João Guerreiro, who was totally free with the ball in the 53rd minute. João Guerreiro took the ball and in the 54 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Mădălin Crainic. Mădălin Crainic dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-2. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Alex Miguel in the 59th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Mădălin Crainic prevented the ball from getting in the gole. The Portugal fans' excitement grew in the 59th match minute when Portugal's Alex Miguel looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-2 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Romania's Mugur Zglobiu was substituted for Tiberiu Militaru. Diamantino Amaro took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ştefan Suşu, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The Romania fans' excitement grew in the 69th match minute when Romania's Ştefan Suşu looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 3-3 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Portugal's Sérgio Neto was substituted for Alex Miguel. Diamantino Amaro was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Ştefan Suşu showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 3-4 in the 73 minute of play. In the 80thth minute of the game Sérgio Neto who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Romania's Mădălin Crainic was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 86 minutes into the match, Romania's goal looked a bit too open when Sérgio Neto came free, but Mădălin Crainic reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Mădălin Crainic showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sérgio Neto, who was totally free with the ball in the 88th minute. 89 minutes had been played when some careless play by Romania's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Nuno Anjos was slow to take the kick. During this time Portugal's players had a chance to rest. Vali Rădulescu thought of kicking away a contribution in front of goal but messed it up so badly that the ball went to the right of an astonished Mădălin Crainic, a very annoying self made goal in the 89th minute which led to 4-4. An unexpected shot in the 92nd minute by Ştefan Suşu got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. A collision led to Romania getting a freekick after 93 minutes play. Vali Rădulescu hit a great ball. In the 95th minute João Guerreiro shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mădălin Crainic saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Portugal's Diamantino Amaro proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 97th minute of the match, managed to save Portugal from getting a goal against them. When the referee blew the final whistle, you could see the dissatisfaction in the Portugal players' eyes. They were disappointed they hadn't taken more from the game.
