Dean Grieve was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Frederico Hendrickx showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-0 in the 6 minute of play. FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Donny Sheringham quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Axel Uplegger, made in the 9th minute of the game. Dean Grieve was a little too slow when Frederico Hendrickx got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 10th minute. The score was now 2-0. FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Zhang Hong Xun played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Facundo Feria in the 15th minute of play. Dean Grieve stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Frederico Hendrickx's shot from short distance in the 21st minute. A collision led to PERSPOLIS getting a freekick after 23 minutes play. Facundo Feria hit a great ball. 30 minutes into the match, FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Frederico Hendrickx sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Dean Grieve narrowly saved just below the crossbar. 30 minutes into the game, Frederico Hendrickx recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Dean Grieve. Frederico Hendrickx showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 4-0. Elu Milde kicked well hit freekick during the 32nd minute of the match. Honorio Carceles struck a weak shot in the 33rd minute. Zhang Hong Xun didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for PERSPOLIS. PERSPOLIS's Dean Grieve proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 38th minute of the match, managed to save PERSPOLIS from getting a goal against them. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 5-0.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Frederico Hendrickx stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After some careless play in the PERSPOLIS defense, Frederico Hendrickx kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Dean Grieve. The PERSPOLIS fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Dean Grieve should have stopped the shot. In the 58th minute, Yiyo Esperta hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 59 played minutes FC Shakhtar Donetsk got a freekick which was hit by Gonsalve Recemill. Frederico Hendrickx's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Dean Grieve read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 62nd minute of play. When the match had gone on for 65 minutes, Frederico Hendrickx put it in 8-0 from a short distance just to the right of Dean Grieve. After some careless play in the PERSPOLIS defense, Frederico Hendrickx kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Dean Grieve. The PERSPOLIS fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Dean Grieve should have stopped the shot. Frederico Hendrickx might have been able to make a better finish in the 73rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Dean Grieve. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Frederico Hendrickx ran back to his position shaking his head. Dean Grieve took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Frederico Hendrickx, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Frederico Hendrickx had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 76th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Frederico Hendrickx got a good chance for a goal in the 79th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Frederico Hendrickx in the 80th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Dean Grieve prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Frederico Hendrickx blasted a shot towards the goal in the 82nd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Dean Grieve having to make a save. In the 84thth minute of the game Frederico Hendrickx who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but PERSPOLIS's Dean Grieve was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. PERSPOLIS's Bela Herrero got a good chance for a goal in the 91st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. When FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Frederico Hendrickx in the 95th minute got a chance for a shot 95th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye PERSPOLIS's goalie prevented a goal. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. FC Shakhtar Donetsk fully deserved thier win.
