But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Wes Lieckens couldn't finish the play. Beto Márcico hit a great freekick 35 minutes into the match. After 38 played minutes Sporting de Gijón got a freekick which was hit by Atilano Feo. Sergio Romero made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Emanuele Maestri in the 38th minute of play. After 40 minutes Sporting de Gijón's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Emanuele Maestri who took care of the corner kick. Atilano Feo hit a great freekick 44 minutes into the match. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

Sporting de Gijón's Angel Di Maria was substituted for Melchor Rosio. After a rather tough play, ❇ᛗᛁᛏᚱᚺ‍ᚨᚾᛞᛁᚱ❇'s Ennio Orlandi got a free kick in the 52nd minute. Sporting de Gijón's Elpidio Bixintxo got a good chance for a goal in the 57th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Francesco Di Sante replaced Andrea Andreozzi. After taking down the ball on ❇ᛗᛁᛏᚱᚺ‍ᚨᚾᛞᛁᚱ❇'s corner Tsubasa Ozora fired away a hard shot, but the defenders efficiently covered the most dangerous angles and Sergio Romero quite easily take care of the ball. Cisco Wakabayashi made a fantastic save in the 72nd minute, when Elpidio Bixintxo sent off a good shot on target. An unexpectedly hard shot by Tsubasa Ozora in the 74th minute of play forced Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Sergio Romero to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a defensive mix-up in ❇ᛗᛁᛏᚱᚺ‍ᚨᚾᛞᛁᚱ❇'s zone, Elpidio Bixintxo stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Cisco Wakabayashi came out of the goal and Elpidio Bixintxo tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 84th minute, Elpidio Bixintxo managed to get in a good position for a shot. Sporting de Gijón's supporters rose to their feet, but Elpidio Bixintxo was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Cisco Wakabayashi breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Sporting de Gijón's Sergio Romero played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Tsubasa Ozora in the 91st minute of play. Elpidio Bixintxo charged in rather forcefully in the 91st minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Elpidio Bixintxo the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. Elpidio Bixintxo hit a great freekick 91 minutes into the match.
