A sloppy throw-in by Dante Grenier in the 15th minute of the game went astray and was snapped up by The Reds's Mårten Stabbe. In the 16th minute, Elliott Barck made a precise shot to the right of Rene Pouliotte. AFC Richmond's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. In the 20th minute, Dante Grenier left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The AFC Richmond fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-2. 25 minutes into the match, The Reds's goal looked a bit too open when Lupe Titus came free, but Johnny Paulin reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The audience thought a goal was coming when Conny Aleberg got free with Rene Pouliotte in the 30th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Egil Kilstedt recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 33rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. A collision led to The Reds getting a freekick after 37 minutes play. Brian Högberg hit a great ball. In the 38th minute, Brett Hull got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Brett Hull might have been able to make a better finish in the 40th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Johnny Paulin. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Brett Hull ran back to his position shaking his head. Johnny Paulin showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Lupe Titus, who was totally free with the ball in the 41st minute. Johnny Paulin took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Lupe Titus, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Elliott Barck sent away a hard shot on goal in the 44th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Brett Hull to make the kick off. In the 77th match minute, The Reds was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Conny Aleberg to maneuver through the defense. After a defensive mix-up in The Reds's zone, Brett Hull stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Johnny Paulin came out of the goal and Brett Hull tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A collision led to The Reds getting a freekick after 81 minutes play. Stig Broberg hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Rashad Stern in the 84th minute of play forced The Reds's goalkeeper Johnny Paulin to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 86th minute Brett Hull shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Johnny Paulin saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 89 minutes into the game, AFC Richmond's Lupe Titus nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Johnny Paulin made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-3. After a rather tough play, AFC Richmond's Rashad Stern got a free kick in the 96th minute.
