If Rui Costa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 17th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by 莫鹰景 in the 24th minute of play forced Italy's goalkeeper Bruno Antognoni to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. A throw-in in the 32nd minute of the game was made by Ding Maldini with Cadman 赵云 as target, who quickly passed the ball forward. Oliver Bierhoff recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 40th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

China made a substitution. Zhu Cheng Guo replaced 鲁朋旭. The audience thought a goal was coming when Cadman 赵云 got free with Bruno Antognoni in the 53rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. China's Wei Liang Yu played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Cristoforo Daniele in the 54th minute of play. Cadman 赵云 might have been able to make a better finish in the 56th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Bruno Antognoni. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. With a little luck, Italy's Bruno Antognoni got control of the ball when 柯正轩 tried to sneak it across the goal line. The audience was convinced that Cadman 赵云's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Bruno Antognoni was relentless in the 68th minute of the game.
