With an extended leg and a bit of luck Leopoldo Rivero prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Ramón Abreu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Desiderio Oliveiro in the 16th minute of play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Metin Tekin got free with Leopoldo Rivero in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Olof Mellberg fell near the penalty area in the 46th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored DOROSTOL Ss's protests and gave Olof Mellberg a yellow card for diving instead. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.
