An unexpectedly hard shot by Luan Valle in the 3rd minute of play forced F.C.BARLAD's goalkeeper Niculae Isvoreanu to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Nichifor Codruț got free with Sergio Goicoechea in the 11th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Niculae Isvoreanu made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Luan Valle in the 13th minute of play. Nichifor Codruț who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 15thth minute tested the skills of Sergio Goicoechea when he managed to save the team from getting behind. The supporters of F.C.BARLAD booed when GRÊMIO was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Luiz Gustavo Mazza didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Nichifor Codruț in the 20th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Sergio Goicoechea saved GRÊMIO from getting behind. Marcu Dobre charged in rather forcefully in the 22nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Marcu Dobre the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. The supporters of GRÊMIO booed when F.C.BARLAD was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Marcu Dobre didn't get a good kick on the ball. Niculae Isvoreanu took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Pedro Paulo Varela, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After some careless play in the GRÊMIO defense, Nichifor Codruț kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Sergio Goicoechea. The GRÊMIO fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Sergio Goicoechea should have stopped the shot.

Niculae Isvoreanu made an important save on a dangerous shot by Silvério Pinheiro in the 60th minute. 69 minutes into the game, GRÊMIO's Pedro Paulo Varela nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Niculae Isvoreanu made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-1. Aílton Ferraz made in the 73rd minute of the game a fairly good throw-in which was taken care of by Luiz Gustavo Mazza. Aníbal Moura was slow to take the kick. During this time GRÊMIO's players had a chance to rest. Aníbal Moura made a great header on GRÊMIO's corner, it was just that F.C.BARLAD's Niculae Isvoreanu managed to reach the ball for a save.
