With a little luck, Cascadia United's Leonel Rocco got control of the ball when Matias Bilintx tried to sneak it across the goal line. Cascadia United's Baltasar Piorno managed, thanks to a brazen rush, stole the ball on a throw-in made by Rune Fanström in the 21 minute of the game. Dante Fernendo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Miguel Ángel Benito in the 30th minute of play. After 31 minutes Sporting de Gijón's defender was forced to head the ball over the line for a corner. It was Rene Pueblo who took care of the corner kick. In the 34th minute, Miguel Ángel Benito ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Dante Fernendo was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. When the match had gone on for 39 minutes, Matias Bilintx took a quick shot and it went in 1-2 without a chance for Leonel Rocco to make any attempt to save it. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Miguel Ángel Benito in the 43rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Dante Fernendo saved Sporting de Gijón from getting behind. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-3.

The wind increased when Matias Bilintx made the kick off in the second half. When Miguel Ángel Benito came up free with the goalie in the 58th minute, the Cascadia United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Miguel Ángel Benito couldn't finish the play. Sporting de Gijón were awarded a corner in the 61th minute after Cascadia United's defender lost control of the ball, allowing it to roll out over the line. Saturnino Curcio took the corner. Sporting de Gijón's Dante Fernendo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Miguel Ángel Benito in the 63rd minute of play. Leonel Rocco took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Ademar Rocha, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 66 minutes into the match, Sporting de Gijón's goalkeeper Dante Fernendo had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Miguel Ángel Benito. The audience was convinced that Matias Bilintx's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Leonel Rocco was relentless in the 69th minute of the game. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Matias Bilintx in the 70th managed to get into a good position. The supporters of Cascadia United booed when Sporting de Gijón was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 72 match minutes in a wonderful position. Niceto Dominix didn't get a good kick on the ball. Leonel Rocco stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ademar Rocha's shot from short distance in the 77th minute. After 84 played minutes Cascadia United got a freekick which was hit by Iván Pillud. After a defensive mix-up in Cascadia United's zone, Darío Moreno stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Leonel Rocco came out of the goal and Darío Moreno tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 90 minutes into the game, Sporting de Gijón's Venancio Emesto nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Leonel Rocco made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-3. In the 94th minute of the match Darío Moreno shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Leonel Rocco showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. The Cascadia United supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Cascadia United would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
