The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. CD Guallagro's Trota Lamboy got a good chance for a goal in the 3rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Pål Jönsson fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 5th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Criban Goyanes having to interfere. Criban Goyanes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Pål Jönsson in the 9th minute of the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Jacinto Macia got free with Criban Goyanes in the 13th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Arnoldo Dorrego didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Rodrigo Azpeitia went, in the 15th minute, to the upper right corner, 0-1 was the resulting score. When the match had gone on for 19 minutes, Roger Odman took a quick shot and it went in 1-1 without a chance for Criban Goyanes to make any attempt to save it. In the 22nd match minute, Guayaquil City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Jacinto Macia to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jacinto Macia in the 29th minute of play forced CD Guallagro's goalkeeper Criban Goyanes to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Rodrigo Azpeitia received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 31st minute. Arnoldo Dorrego tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 37th minute, Roger Odman fired away a shot on goal. He put a little to much spin on the ball and sent it just wide of the right post. When Jimmy Iruretagoyena fell near the penalty area in the 41st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored CD Guallagro's protests and gave Jimmy Iruretagoyena a yellow card for diving instead. The supporters of Guayaquil City booed when CD Guallagro was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 41 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jimmy Iruretagoyena didn't get a good kick on the ball. 46 minutes into the match, Roger Odman dribbled the ball past the defender and swiftly kicked the ball to the left of Criban Goyanes, 2-1. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 2-1 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Rodrigo Azpeitia to make the kick off. After a defensive mix-up in CD Guallagro's zone, Roger Odman stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Criban Goyanes came out of the goal and Roger Odman tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Lisandro Gavarnet charged in rather forcefully in the 52nd minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Lisandro Gavarnet the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 53rd match minute, CD Guallagro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Lisandro Gavarnet to maneuver through the defense. In the 56th minute, Roger Odman ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Criban Goyanes was frozen by the shot and now it was 3-1. In the 60th match minute, CD Guallagro was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Christian Sanz to maneuver through the defense. After 62 minutes of play, Guayaquil City's Roger Odman made it 4-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Criban Goyanes was left in no man's land by his defense there! Criban Goyanes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Pål Jönsson in the 65th minute of the match. In the 66th minute, Roger Odman made a precise shot to the right of Criban Goyanes. CD Guallagro's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 5-1. Criban Goyanes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Roger Odman in the 71st minute of the match. Jimmy Iruretagoyena's shot straight on target was not completely harmless. The ball had pretty good speed, but Arnoldo Dorrego firmly grabbed it by the left post. After some careless play in the CD Guallagro defense, Pål Jönsson kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Criban Goyanes. The CD Guallagro fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Criban Goyanes should have stopped the shot. Criban Goyanes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Roger Odman in the 79th minute of the match. Jacinto Macia took the ball and in the 81 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Criban Goyanes. Criban Goyanes dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 7-1. After having played for 89 minutes, Roger Odman managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Guayaquil City's supporters crossed their fingers, but Roger Odman was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Criban Goyanes showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Roger Odman, who was totally free with the ball in the 91st minute. A collision led to CD Guallagro getting a freekick after 96 minutes play. Valentin Arrateguibel hit a great ball. When Guayaquil City's Roger Odman in the 98th minute got a chance for a shot 98th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye CD Guallagro's goalie prevented a goal. CD Guallagro's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
