Sam McIntyre showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rene Riddle, who was totally free with the ball in the 15th minute. Scotty Rasmussen came out of the goal in the 18th minute to try and stop a shot by New York Red Bulls FC's Gilson do Vale. But to his dismay, Gilson do Vale quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. 23 minutes into the match, Buna's goalkeeper Scotty Rasmussen had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Gilson do Vale. When Scotty Rainey fell near the penalty area in the 33rd minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored New York Red Bulls FC's protests and gave Scotty Rainey a yellow card for diving instead. Tom Tobin fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 34th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Sam McIntyre having to interfere. Tommy Watson scored 3-0 in the 39th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Scotty Rasmussen, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Scotty Rasmussen made an important save on a dangerous shot by Cícero Amaral in the 44th minute. The audience thought a goal was coming when Gilson do Vale got free with Scotty Rasmussen in the 46th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 3-0 at half-time.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Gilson do Vale stepped up to make the kick off in the second half.
