Cleveland DuLin started the match with the kick off. Paul Champion took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Eugenio Conley, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The supporters of Montreal FC booed when Dawson was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 15 match minutes in a wonderful position. Luther Charest didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 18 played minutes, Montreal FC's Clayton Émond shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Ambroise Smiley came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Montreal FC reached it. Cleveland DuLin might have been able to make a better finish in the 19th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Paul Champion. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Cleveland DuLin ran back to his position shaking his head. Cleveland DuLin recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 22nd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 30th minute, Clayton Émond ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Ambroise Smiley was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. After some careless play in the Montreal FC defense, Jeramy Lafond kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Paul Champion. The Montreal FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Paul Champion should have stopped the shot. 39 minutes into the match, Montreal FC's Emmanuel Bernard sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Ambroise Smiley narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Emmanuel Bernard blasted a shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ambroise Smiley having to make a save.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Emmanuel Bernard to make the kick off. In the 51st match minute, Dawson was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Virgil AyotHayot to maneuver through the defense. In the 54thth minute of the game Cleveland DuLin who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Montreal FC's Paul Champion was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Stanford Houser's late challenge caught a Dawson's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Stanford Houser helped the player get up and apologised. After a rather tough play, Montreal FC's Stanford Houser got a free kick in the 57th minute. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Alec Galloway during the 58th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. When the match clock showed 59 minutes, the score became 2-1 when Cleveland DuLin sped through Montreal FC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Paul Champion. In the 88th match minute, Dawson was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Nicky Knox to maneuver through the defense. During the 91st minute of the match Alec Galloway completely mistimed his tackle and brought down his opponent. The referee gave Alec Galloway a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game. Paul Champion made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cleveland DuLin in the 93rd minute of play. If Bertram Comer had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 95th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Dawson's fans were exulted and cheered after their team won in a match that could easily have gone the other way.
