Manchester United's Geovanni Esteves got a good chance for a goal in the 27th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. If Duarte de Alcântara had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 28th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. 33 minutes into the match, Manchester United's goalkeeper Jacinto Carvalho had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Cléberson de Alcântara. In the 34th minute, Leonardo Carioca hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Duarte de Alcântara to make the kick off. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Kaká Pombal might have been able to make a better finish in the 78th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Cristóvão Severo. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Kaká Pombal ran back to his position shaking his head. Cristóvão Severo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Duarte de Alcântara, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side.
