The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. 9 minutes into the match, Libertadores's goal looked a bit too open when Endel Lepik came free, but Hélio Neiva reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. An unexpectedly hard shot by Paulo Recife in the 10th minute of play forced Number One's goalkeeper Róbson Perez to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Zé Terra had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 11th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The supporters of Libertadores booed when Number One was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Willian Baptista didn't get a good kick on the ball. Wanderson Paiva recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 43rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Paulo Recife's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Róbson Perez read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 45th minute of play.
Róbson Perez showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Generoso Gasteiz in the 52nd minute of the match. Paulo Recife could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 54th minute of the match, but Róbson Perez made a huge save. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Róbson Perez showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Libertadores's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Ricardinho Matos in the 97th minute. Libertadores's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
