An unexpected shot in the 39th minute by Marcos Urbano got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Ernesto Rossi made an important save on a dangerous shot by Zézinho de Barros in the 44th minute. Ernesto Rossi was a little too slow when Zézinho de Barros got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 44th minute. The score was now 1-0. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 1-0.

If Antônio Cavalcante had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 52nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. The supporters of Fluminense FC booed when Vilfes FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 91 match minutes in a wonderful position. Zézinho de Barros didn't get a good kick on the ball.
