Edmundo Valladares's late challenge caught a Botafogo's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Edmundo Valladares helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Fluminense FC getting a freekick after 11 minutes play. Edmundo Valladares hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Luisinho Santos in the 13th minute of play forced Fluminense FC's goalkeeper Ernesto Rossi to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 23 minutes into the game, Luisinho Santos was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Botafogo's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Fluminense FC the free kick. The supporters of Fluminense FC booed when Botafogo was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 23 match minutes in a wonderful position. Luisinho Santos didn't get a good kick on the ball. André Nóbrega sent away a hard shot on goal in the 25th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Benedito Gomes showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from André Nóbrega in the 26th minute of the match. Zeca de Godoi fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 29th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ernesto Rossi having to interfere. Ernesto Rossi took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Zeca de Godoi, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Fluminense FC's Ernesto Rossi played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luisinho Santos in the 35th minute of play. In the 38thth minute of the game Luisinho Santos who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Fluminense FC's Ernesto Rossi was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. A collision led to Botafogo getting a freekick after 43 minutes play. Gonçalo da Rocha hit a great ball. 47 minutes into the match, Fluminense FC's goal looked a bit too open when Luisinho Santos came free, but Ernesto Rossi reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After the first half Botafogo were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

When the match clock showed 55 minutes, the score became 0-3 when Luisinho Santos sped through Fluminense FC's defense and sent away a curving shot that went into the net to the right of Ernesto Rossi. With his leg Ernesto Rossi managed to avoid a goal in the 60thth minute, when Botafogo's Luisinho Santos fired away a shot with a lot of spin towards his right hand side. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Luisinho Santos in the 62nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Ernesto Rossi prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Fluminense FC's Ernesto Rossi played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Luisinho Santos in the 65th minute of play. In the 66th minute, Edmundo Valladares hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After 67 minutes, Luisinho Santos made it 0-4 with a short kick to the right side. Fluminense FC's Ernesto Rossi tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Botafogo's Luisinho Santos got a good chance for a goal in the 70th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Zeca de Godoi recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 74th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. An unexpectedly hard shot by André Nóbrega in the 78th minute of play forced Botafogo's goalkeeper Benedito Gomes to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Fluminense FC's attacker deliberately struck the ball against an opponent to win a corner for his team. The corner was taken by Giuseppe Cosme in the 83rd minute. The corner ended in Giuseppe Cosme almost managing to get the ball behind the net, but Botafogo's Benedito Gomes did a great save. Luisinho Santos sent away a hard shot on goal in the 85th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Botafogo's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
