Mariano Mundo was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. The audience was convinced that Iker Ugutz's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Mariano Mundo was relentless in the 16th minute of the game. Damian Cordareo took the ball and in the 19 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Hector Odol. Hector Odol dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-1. Iker Ugutz fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 27th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mariano Mundo having to interfere. Aquilino Oso could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 28th minute of the match, but Mariano Mundo made a huge save. In the 30th minute, one of FC Barcelona:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for FC Barcelona. The goalkeeper, Mariano Mundo, was totally fooled by Independiente's Emiliano Petri, who 31 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. In the 34th minute Emiliano Petri shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mariano Mundo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Mariano Mundo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Igor Sal, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Mariano Mundo stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Emiliano Petri's shot from short distance in the 43rd minute. Hector Odol showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Cecilio Bitxintxo, who was totally free with the ball in the 45th minute. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Iker Ugutz made a kick off. 52 minutes into the game, Ernesto Tohias was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. FC Barcelona's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Independiente the free kick. A collision led to FC Barcelona getting a freekick after 52 minutes play. Ernesto Tohias hit a great ball. Igor Sal sent away a hard shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Aquilino Oso scored 5-1 in the 56th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Mariano Mundo, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Mariano Mundo made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Aquilino Oso in the 59th minute of play. If Iker Ugutz had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 60th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Emiliano Petri sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Ernesto Tohias hit a great freekick 64 minutes into the match. Aquilino Oso fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 71st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mariano Mundo having to interfere. In the 72nd minute, Ernesto Tohias hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. After a defensive mix-up in FC Barcelona's zone, Igor Sal stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Mariano Mundo came out of the goal and Igor Sal tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Ubaldo Corderro made a great header on Independiente's corner, it was just that FC Barcelona's Mariano Mundo managed to reach the ball for a save. Emiliano Petri received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 87th minute. Mariano Mundo tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If Igor Sal had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 93rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Iker Ugutz fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 95th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mariano Mundo having to interfere. Independiente's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
