Tod Whalley fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 17th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ralf Woodhall having to interfere. Tod Whalley recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 19th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Peter Potterton struck a weak shot in the 27th minute. Ralf Woodhall didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Oldham City. Ian Houlahan hit a great freekick 30 minutes into the match. After 32 minutes of play, Oldham City's Tod Whalley made it 0-1 when he simply outclassed the defender marking him and hit a curling shot into the right side of the net. Ralf Woodhall was left in no man's land by his defense there! If Tod Whalley had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 35th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. In the 37th minute Peter Potterton shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ralf Woodhall saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Tod Whalley sent away a hard shot on goal in the 39th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After 40 played minutes Grangetown F.C. got a freekick which was hit by Hayden Way. Ralf Woodhall stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Peter Potterton's shot from short distance in the 44th minute. The supporters of Oldham City booed when Grangetown F.C. was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 44 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hayden Way didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 47th minute of the match Oldham City got a corner. Grangetown F.C.'s goalie ran out to the linesman to protest the call, but the linesman resolutely pointed his flag at the cornerflag. Robbie Wiley ran over to the corner to take the kick. The corner led Oldham City's Robbie Wiley to fire away a dangerous shot which Ralf Woodhall despite some difficulties managed to get hold on the ball. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Peter Potterton blasted a shot towards the goal in the 55th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Ralf Woodhall having to make a save. Ralf Woodhall came out of the goal in the 56th minute to try and stop a shot by Oldham City's Tod Whalley. But to his dismay, Tod Whalley quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-2. When Freddy Crocker fell near the penalty area in the 59th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Oldham City's protests and gave Freddy Crocker a yellow card for diving instead. After 59 played minutes Oldham City got a freekick which was hit by Freddy Crocker. If Peter Potterton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 63rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. If Tod Whalley had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 68th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 69 played minutes Grangetown F.C. got a freekick which was hit by Ian Houlahan. Austen Beavan sent away a hard shot on goal in the 76th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 81st minute Peter Potterton shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ralf Woodhall saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Oldham City's zone, Bryan Hurst stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Phillip Hindmarsh came out of the goal and Bryan Hurst tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. After having played for 85 minutes, Bryan Hurst managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Grangetown F.C.'s supporters crossed their fingers, but Bryan Hurst was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The supporters of Oldham City booed when Grangetown F.C. was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 89 match minutes in a wonderful position. Hayden Way didn't get a good kick on the ball. Ralf Woodhall made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Peter Potterton in the 94th minute of play. The Grangetown F.C. fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Oldham City were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
