Spectators: 5000 (Terracing: 4000, Seating: 1000, VIP seats: 0) Sidney Bourne made the kick off and thus started the match. The supporters of Oldham City booed when Newnham was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 5 match minutes in a wonderful position. Beinn Jackson didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 8thth minute of the game Peter Potterton who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Newnham's John-Paul Pell was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Oldham City's Phillip Hindmarsh played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sidney Bourne in the 15th minute of play. In the 17thth minute of the game Sidney Bourne who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Oldham City's Phillip Hindmarsh was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. 18 minutes into the game, Peter Whiteley was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Oldham City's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Newnham the free kick. After 18 played minutes Oldham City got a freekick which was hit by Peter Whiteley. Peter Elam who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 20thth minute tested the skills of Phillip Hindmarsh when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 21st minute of the match Gavin Bramhall shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but John-Paul Pell showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Phillip Hindmarsh took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sidney Bourne, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 24 minutes into the game, Oldham City's Peter Potterton nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. John-Paul Pell made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-1. In the 27th minute, Peter Elam ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Phillip Hindmarsh was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-1. John-Paul Pell made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Peter Potterton in the 32nd minute of play. Peter Elam's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 34thth minute, Phillip Hindmarsh skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. Peter Elam who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 35thth minute tested the skills of Phillip Hindmarsh when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Glen Cain hit a great freekick 37 minutes into the match. After a defensive mix-up in Oldham City's zone, Sidney Bourne stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Phillip Hindmarsh came out of the goal and Sidney Bourne tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. A collision led to Oldham City getting a freekick after 40 minutes play. Julian Downes hit a great ball. Phillip Hindmarsh made an important save on a dangerous shot by Peter Elam in the 44th minute. Oldham City's Phillip Hindmarsh played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Sidney Bourne in the 45th minute of play. Peter Elam struck a weak shot in the 47th minute. Phillip Hindmarsh didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Newnham.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Peter Potterton to strike the kick off in the second half. Phillip Hindmarsh made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Peter Elam in the 53rd minute of play. Sidney Bourne received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 62nd minute. Phillip Hindmarsh tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Phillip Hindmarsh showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sidney Bourne in the 65th minute of the match. Phillip Hindmarsh showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Sidney Bourne, who was totally free with the ball in the 66th minute. Peter Potterton received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. John-Paul Pell came out and tried to block the shot, but Peter Potterton slotted it home off the left post making it 1-2 in the 67th minute. John-Paul Pell made an important save on a dangerous shot by Tod Whalley in the 71st minute. Tod Whalley took the ball and in the 72 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised John-Paul Pell. John-Paul Pell dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 1-3. If Peter Potterton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 81st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. The audience was convinced that Peter Potterton's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but John-Paul Pell was relentless in the 83rd minute of the game. In the 87th minute, Matty Hicks hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Peter Potterton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 89th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. In the 93rd match minute, Oldham City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Peter Potterton to maneuver through the defense. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Oldham City had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
