Jude Stayton blasted a shot towards the goal in the 4th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without John-Paul Gunn having to make a save. John-Paul Gunn showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Teddy Sheene in the 6th minute of the match. John-Paul Gunn took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Crispin Weston, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Teddy Sheene in the 11th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg John-Paul Gunn saved Tottenham Hotspurs from getting behind. Teddy Sheene received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 13th minute. John-Paul Gunn tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. John-Paul Gunn stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Crispin Weston's shot from short distance in the 17th minute. In the 18th match minute, Tottenham Hotspurs was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Liam Tully to maneuver through the defense. When Teddy Sheene came up free with the goalie in the 19th minute, the Middlesbrough F.C fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Teddy Sheene couldn't finish the play. 23 minutes into the match, Tottenham Hotspurs's goal looked a bit too open when Crispin Weston came free, but John-Paul Gunn reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 25 minutes into the match, Middlesbrough F.C's Crispin Weston sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that John-Paul Gunn narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Bruce Starr received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 32nd minute. Steve Townsley tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. If Teddy Sheene had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 36th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Crispin Weston recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 38th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Crispin Weston sent away a hard shot on goal in the 41st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When Crispin Weston came up free with the goalie in the 48th minute, the Middlesbrough F.C fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Crispin Weston couldn't finish the play. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Pete Bridgewater was the one to do the kick off. John-Paul Gunn made a fantastic save in the 56th minute, when Crispin Weston sent off a good shot on target. If Crispin Weston had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 59th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Teddy Sheene in the 61st minute of play forced Tottenham Hotspurs's goalkeeper John-Paul Gunn to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Tyrone Delaney hit a great freekick 61 minutes into the match. When Crispin Weston came up free with the goalie in the 64th minute, the Middlesbrough F.C fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Crispin Weston couldn't finish the play. John-Paul Gunn showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Teddy Sheene, who was totally free with the ball in the 73rd minute. After 75 minutes, Fraser Warne mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Tottenham Hotspurs and the Middlesbrough F.C players grew even worse after the yellow card. Pete Bridgewater hit a great freekick 79 minutes into the match. 81 minutes into the match, Tottenham Hotspurs's goal looked a bit too open when Teddy Sheene came free, but John-Paul Gunn reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Mark Blowman hit a great freekick 83 minutes into the match. John-Paul Gunn was out of position in the 84 minute of play, and Teddy Sheene capitalized on the mistake with a soft shot into the goal. Teddy Sheene really showed his touch with that goal: 1-1. John-Paul Gunn showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Teddy Sheene in the 88th minute of the match. Middlesbrough F.C's Teddy Sheene got a good chance for a goal in the 92nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a defensive mix-up in Middlesbrough F.C's zone, Pete Bridgewater stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Steve Townsley came out of the goal and Pete Bridgewater tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Dean Taggart charged in rather forcefully in the 95th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Dean Taggart the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After 95 played minutes Middlesbrough F.C got a freekick which was hit by Dean Taggart. When the referee blew the final whistle, you could see the dissatisfaction in the Middlesbrough F.C players' eyes. They were disappointed they hadn't taken more from the game.
