The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Grant Shipperley made in the 7th minute of the game a quick throw-in and Neil Slade immediately put the ball in play. The supporters of Blackburn United booed when South Shields was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 18 match minutes in a wonderful position. Adrian Wildman didn't get a good kick on the ball. 20 minutes into the game, Phillip Buckler was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Blackburn United's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave South Shields the free kick. In the 36th minute, Stuart Welch ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Philip Kendall was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. When the referee blew the final whistle, you could see the dissatisfaction in the South Shields players' eyes. They were disappointed they hadn't taken more from the game.
