Wigan Park
Spectators: 7390 (Terracing: 5500,
Seating: 1750, VIP seats: 140) Wigan's Marc Branson started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After a defensive mix-up in Wigan's zone, Dennis Swanson stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Warren Jenkinson came out of the goal and Dennis Swanson tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Phil Vaughn in the 7th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Warren Jenkinson prevented the ball from getting in the gole. An unexpectedly hard shot by Dennis Swanson in the 10th minute of play forced Wigan's goalkeeper Warren Jenkinson to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The supporters of Mildenhall FC booed when Wigan was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 14 match minutes in a wonderful position. Romeo Platt didn't get a good kick on the ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Dennis Swanson in the 16th minute of play forced Wigan's goalkeeper Warren Jenkinson to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Dennis Swanson struck a weak shot in the 18th minute. Warren Jenkinson didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Mildenhall FC. 20 minutes into the game, Graham Pope was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Wigan's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Mildenhall FC the free kick. After 20 played minutes Wigan got a freekick which was hit by Graham Pope. The audience was convinced that Phil Vaughn's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Warren Jenkinson was relentless in the 23rd minute of the game. In the 23rd match minute, Wigan was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Chris Turk to maneuver through the defense. Dennis Swanson scored 0-1 in the 24th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Warren Jenkinson, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. In the 28th minute, Dennis Swanson got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 30th match minute, Wigan was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Romeo Platt to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, Mildenhall FC's Pierce Rutherford got a free kick in the 44th minute. Duncan Chadwick showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marc Branson, who was totally free with the ball in the 47th minute. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.
The wind increased when Phil Vaughn made the kick off in the second half. A collision led to Wigan getting a freekick after 51 minutes play. Syd Short hit a great ball. Dennis Swanson fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 58th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Warren Jenkinson having to interfere. Mildenhall FC's Phil Vaughn got a good chance for a goal in the 60th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Dennis Swanson received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 64th minute. Warren Jenkinson tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 72nd minute, Joshua Crossman hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Warren Jenkinson took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Phil Vaughn, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Phil Vaughn, 80 minutes into the match, dribbled the ball up the side of the field and decided to take a long shot at the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was poorly hit and landed closer to the corner than to the goal. After 81 played minutes Mildenhall FC got a freekick which was hit by Neil Warne. Graham Pope struck a weak shot in the 85th minute. Duncan Chadwick didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Wigan. Phil Vaughn sent away a hard shot on goal in the 92nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. When the match was over Mildenhall FC could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Wigan throughout the match.
